Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Men's Lacrosse Falls to Falcons, 11-8

WALTHAM, Mass. – Junior attack Ben Warren (Georgetown, Mass.) notched three goals and an assist and junior goalkeeper James O'Neill (East Walpole, Mass.) recorded a season-high 14 saves, but a furious fourth quarter comeback fell just short for the Saint Anselm College men's lacrosse team Tuesday night as the Hawks dropped an NE-10 matchup at Bentley University, 11-8.

The loss drops Saint Anselm to 0-5 overall and 0-3 in the Northeast-10 Conference. Bentley, meanwhile, improves to 3-2 overall and 2-1 in league play.

Bentley came out hot to open the game, surging to a commanding 7-1 lead over the first 18 minutes. Saint Anselm's lone score over that span was notched by sophomore Alex Pacitti (Foxboro, Mass.) off an assist by senior Andy Budz (Williamstown, Mass.) to cut a 2-0 deficit in half at the 9:23 mark of the first quarter.

The Hawks promptly responded with a bit of a run, scoring three of the final four goals of the first half as Warren had a hand in all three Saint Anselm tallies. He notched a James Olsen (Westford, Vt.)-assisted goal at the 7:45 mark, then assisted on a goal by senior Geoff Kennedy (Gloucester, Mass.) and added an unassisted tally of his own as the clock expired to pull the Hawks to within four, 8-4, at the half.

Bentley would snatch back the momentum to open the third quarter, scoring two goals in the opening five minutes and adding another late to shut out the Hawks in the period.

Saint Anselm refused to go away quietly, however, scoring the final four goals of the game. Sophomore Mark Vitello (Weymouth, Mass.) scored his first goal of the season in his first game of the season in unassisted fashion, then senior Charles Geraghty (Norwich, Vt.) capped off Warren's hat trick with a man-up goal four minutes later. Sophomore Brennan Quackenbush (Marshfield, Mass.) and sophomore Matt Johnson (Watertown, Mass.) both also got into the scoring act late—Johnson's coming with just eight seconds left on the game clock—but the offense awoke a bit too late as Bentley escaped with an important league win.

O'Neill bettered his previous outing of 13 saves with one more against the Falcons Tuesday afternoon, and held host Bentley scoreless in an eight-shot fourth quarter. Bentley goalkeeper Daniel Shaughnessy tallied 12 saves on the night.

For the game, Saint Anselm was outshot 50-31 as the Falcons also owned a 16-5 advantage on faceoffs. Eight different Falcons scored in the victory.

Saint Anselm will return to action Saturday evening for matchup against Assumption College. The NE-10 showdown has been moved from Grappone Stadium on the campus of Saint Anselm to Gill Stadium in downtown Manchester. Opening faceoff is slated for 6 p.m.
