Vonleh double-double not enough as Hawks fall to Falcons

Box Score

WALTHAM, Mass. – Saint Anselm College had their five game winning-streak snapped with a 60-46 setback to Bentley University on Monday night in Northeast-10 Conference women's basketball action at the Dana Center in Waltham, Mass.

The Hawks fall to 5-2 overall and 3-2 in the NE-10 with the defeat, while Bentley improves to 7-2 and 3-2 in league games.

Ali Glennon (Bedford, N.H.) gave the Hawks an early 6-2 lead with a pair of free throws, but the Falcons used a 13-1 run over the next five minutes to take a 15-7 lead with 2:31 remaining in the first quarter. Kaila Duarte (Dorchester, Mass.) ended the run with a jumper to make it 15-9, and the two teams traded baskets near the end of the period to make it a 19-11 game after one.

A Duarte jumper at the 6:37 mark of the second quarter cut the deficit to 21-15, but an 8-0 run from the home team pushed the Bentley lead back to 29-15. A quick 5-0 spurt by the Hawks got the game back to within nine following a Candace Andrews (Boston, Mass.) layup, but Bentley answered with a 5-0 run of their own to reclaim a 34-20 lead. Raquel Johnson (Inglewood, Calif.) knocked down a jumper before the end of the half as the Hawks entered the break trailing 34-22.

The Hawks slowly chipped away coming out of the half and a Samnell Vonleh (Swampscott, Mass.) layup at the 5:21 mark made it a 38-28 game. Bentley scored five-straight to go back on top by 15, but Clairee Putnam (Windham, N.H.) and Caitlyn Abela (North Easton, Mass.) sandwiched triples around a Falcon basket, and Raquel Johnson connected on a jumper as Saint Anselm entered the fourth quarter facing a 45-36 deficit.

Bentley extended their lead to by as many as 19 in the final period, and a 7-0 run by the Hawks capped off by an Abela triple put the Hawks to within 12 at 57-45. A Candace Andrews free throw would make it an 11-point game, but that would be as close as the Hawks would get as the Falcons held on for the 60-46 victory.

Samnell Vonleh led the Hawks with a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds with three blocks, while Caitlyn Abela joined her in double figures with 10 points on the night. Raquel Johnson chipped in nine points and five rebounds off the bench. Candace Andrews had five points, seven rebounds, seven assists, and two steals.

Jen Gemma led the Falcons with 18 points and seven rebounds, while Victoria Lux had 12 points and four rebounds.

Saint Anselm dominated the glass, outrebounding the Falcons 47-33 in the game, but committed 22 turnovers on the night leading to 27 Bentley points.

The Hawks are back in action on Wednesday night when they travel to Assumption College for a 5:30 p.m. meeting with the Greyhounds.
