Connect four: Hawks win fourth-straight

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Ali Glennon (Bedford, N.H.) and Caitlyn Abela (North Easton, Mass.) scored 17 points apiece to help lead Saint Anselm College to their fourth-straight victory with a 75-63 win over Chowan University on Sunday afternoon at the University of the District of Columbia.

Glennon and Abela combined to go 7-of-11 from beyond the arc and had two steals apiece in the win. The Hawks improve to 4-1 overall on the young season and return to action on Saturday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. against Merrimack College at Stoutenburgh Gymnasium.

Kaila Duarte (Dorchester, Mass.) scored 12 points and grabbed six rebounds off the bench, while Candace Andrews (Boston, Mass.) recorded 11 points, four rebounds, seven assists, one steal, and one block.

Andrews capped off an 11-4 run to open the game for the Hawks, and Abela's first triple of the game extended the lead to 16-8 with 1:19 to play in the first quarter. Chowan ended the period scoring the final five points and only trailed 16-13 after one.

Glennon opened the second quarter with a three to put the Hawks back on top by five before another Abela triple and a Samnell Vonleh (Swampscott, Mass.) layup gave the Hawks a 23-14 advantage. With 3:32 to play in the half, Glennon hit another three to extend the lead to 34-20, but Chowan answered with a 10-0 run to cut the deficit to only 34-30. Abela stopped the bleeding with a jumper in the final seconds as the Hawks clung to a 36-30 lead headed into the break.

The two teams traded baskets to open the third quarter and a layup from Alisha Mobley got Chowan to within one possession at 41-38 with 6:34 to play. This time the Hawks answered with a run of their own, outscoring Chowan 19-5 over the final six minutes of play to take a 60-43 lead into the final stanza.

Chowan would get as close as 71-63 with 1:29 to play in regulation, but Clairee Putnam (Windham, N.H.) went 4-for-4 at the charity stripe down the stretch to help the Hawks hold on for the 75-63 victory.

The Hawks shot 44.4% (24-54) from the field on the day and knocked down 20-of-22 freethrows (90.9%).
