HOW IT HAPPENED
- Saint Anselm struck first as it received the opening kick and went 79 yards in just five plays and 2:11, with Fairweather capping the series on a 60-yard touchdown sprint that made it 7-0.
- The Hawks then surprised the Setters in the final game of the year with an onside kick that Saint Anselm recovered at the Pace 30-yard line. It took the hosts six plays to cover the 30 yards, with Covaliu scoring on an 8-yard run that doubled the lead to 14-0 at the 10:12 mark of the opening quarter.
- Pace answered right back with an eight-play, 72-yard drive that was polished off by a 5-yard Wallace touchdown run to slice the deficit in half with 6:07 left in the first quarter.
- Following a short punt and a kick-catching interference call in the second quarter, Saint Anselm began the drive at the Pace 18-yard line and used a pair of rushes by Covaliu, including another 8-yard touchdown run, to go up 21-7 just 3:37 into the second stanza.
- The Saint Anselm defense then forced a three-and-out on the ensuing drive and a big punt block from junior DL Richie Curran (Freehold, N.J.) again gave the offense great field position at the Pace 15-yard line. On the following play, Fairweather found sophomore WR Ryan Head (Loudon, N.H.) for another touchdown that made it a three-score game. The Hawks faked the extra point and senior LB Joel Jorgensen (Eldersburg, Md.) hit Head for the two-point conversion that widened the Saint Anselm lead to 29-7 with 10:48 on the clock in the second quarter.
- Later in the frame, a long punt return set Pace up at the Saint Anselm 27-yard line and it took the Setters just three plays to find the end zone as Pickering scored on a 3-yard touchdown run that trimmed the Pace deficit to 29-14 with 4:40 left before the half.
- Pace climbed right back in it, taking advantage of a Saint Anselm fumble as Wallace hooked up with Prince Unaegbu on a 22-yard touchdown throw with just 29 seconds on the clock. Senior DB Carroll Bailey (Clinton, Mass.) blocked his second extra point in an as many weeks to keep it a two-score game at 29-20.
- The Setters opened the second-half scoring on a five-play, 76-yard drive that was capped by a 42-yard Wallace run, which pulled Pace within 29-27 at the 6:30 mark of the third quarter.
- Pace continued to steal momentum as Corrie picked off Fairweather and converted the takeaway into a Nick Fountis 32-yard field goal that gave the Setters their first lead of the afternoon at 30-29.
- Saint Anselm leapfrogged back in front on the ensuing drive, using 11 plays to set up a 27-yard field goal from senior K/P Shane Grayson (Ormond Beach, Fla.) that made it 32-30 just 2:32 into the fourth quarter.
- Pace looked like it was going to regain the lead, but a 15-play drive fizzled out at the Saint Anselm 22-yard line as the Setters turned the ball over with just 3:14 on the clock.
- The Setters had one more shot after forcing a punt, but Saint Anselm sealed the victory as Jaundoo intercepted Wallace and returned it 19-yards for a pick-six that made it 39-30 with just five seconds on the clock.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Pace outgained Saint Anselm in total offensive yards, 429-270, including 398-211 on the ground. Saint Anselm held a slight 59-31 edge in passing yards.
- The Setters were 5-for-16 on third-down conversions, while the Hawks were 1 of 9 on third down. Pace was an efficient 3 of 5 on fourth down.

NOTES

- Despite his field goal, Grayson fell one shy of matching Michael Garcarz' all-time record of 24 field goals that he set from 2003-06.
- As a team, the Hawks became the second Saint Anselm squad to reach the 2,000-yard rushing plateau, but fell 153 yards short of the 2008 team's single-season record.
