Early Power Play Goal Sends Norwich Past Men's Hockey, 1-0

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – A first-period power play goal by the host Cadets was the lone score of the game as the Saint Anselm College men's hockey team dropped a hard-fought 1-0 decision to New England Hockey Conference rival Norwich University Friday night at Kreitzberg Arena.

STANDOUT PERFORMERS

• Sophomore Shane Joyce (Pembroke, Mass.) tallied 26 saves for Saint Anselm, evening his season record to 2-2 between the pipes on the season.
• Senior Bryan Sullivan (Burlington, Mass.) and junior Peter Sikalis (Acton, Mass.) each took a team-high five shots on the night.

For the Cadets…

• Brian Rowland scored Norwich's lone goal, on an assist by Ben Hull.
• Goaltender Braeden Ostepchuk recorded a game-high 29 saves, maintaining his unbeaten record at 3-0 and recording his first shutout this season.

HOW IT HAPPENED

• A hooking penalty at the 10:12 mark of the first period handed Norwich a man-up opportunity, and the Cadets took full advantage. Forty seconds into the booking, Rowland corralled a rebounded puck and beat Joyce short side for the would-be game-winner.
• Both teams had a handful of chances late in the third, with both teams' goalies coming up with big stops. A sprawling Ostepchuk halted three consecutive flips from Sullivan, and Joyce wiped off a 2-on-1 breakaway with a pad save just a few plays later.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

• The Cadets were 1-for-3 on its penalty chances, while Saint Anselm went 0-for-6—the first game this season the Hawks were shutout on power play opportunities.
• Saint Anselm edged Norwich in shots, 29-27, and dominated the faceoff game, 41-22.

NOTES

• Saint Anselm drops to 19-43-1 all-time against the Cadets, including a 1-8-1 record over the past 10 matchups.
• Norwich also remains the last unblemished team in the NEHC with a perfect 3-0 mark, handing the Hawks their first league loss of the year.
