Volleyball Clipped by Penmen in Second Straight Five-Setter

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Sophomore Katy Teets (Dix Hills, N.Y.) led a quartet of Hawks with double-digit kill tallies, freshman Jewel Hays (Aliso Niguel, Calif.) chipped in a career-high 54 assists and junior CC Chrisom (Dover, N.H.) posted a match-high 25 digs but the Saint Anselm College volleyball team dropped its second straight five-set heartbreaker Tuesday night in Northeast-10 action to Southern New Hampshire University, 25-22, 23-25, 25-21, 25-23, 15-13, at SNHU Fieldhouse.

STANDOUT PERFORMERS

• Teets ripped a season-high 20 kills Tuesday evening, her first 20-kill tally of the season and highest total since she recorded 23 in a four-set win at New Haven last season. Teets also matched a season-high with 14 digs and three blocks, adding a trio of service aces.
• Freshman Sarah Lowery (Chicago, Ill.) posted her third double-double of the season with 14 kills and 12 digs also adding three blocks of her own.
• Sophomore Amanda Williams (North Andover, Mass.) notched a season-high 12 kills on a blistering .455 hitting clip, also recording five blocks.
• Junior Brennah Gladwill (Citrus Heights, Calif.) added 10 kills and four blocks.
• Hays bettered her career effort posted just this past Saturday with 54 assists, ranking fifth all-time in a five-set match. Hays also chipped in 14 digs and three blocks on the evening.
• Chrisom eclipsed the 20-dig mark for the second time this season with 25 saves Tuesday, one shy of her season-best mark at East Stroudsburg on Sept. 11.
• Senior Lauren Oxley (Bristow, Va.) was a blocking machine Tuesday night posting nine total, including one solo stuff. That effort ranks second all-time in a five-set match.

HOW IT HAPPENED

• After SNHU jumped out to a slim lead in the opening set, the Hawks came roaring back with a four point run off a Lowery kill, Chrisom ace and two Penmen hitting errors. Facing an 18-16 deficit, SNHU then reeled off seven straight points and hung on for the 25-22 set one win.
• Despite holding leads at 18-15 and 19-17 late in the second set, Saint Anselm needed some late-set magic in set two. After giving up a six point run to go down 23-19 the Hawks matched it with a six-point run of its own off three kills from Teets and three attack errors by the Penmen to take the second, 25-23.
• Saint Anselm hopped out to a 3-1 lead in the third, but a four-point run would hand SNHU an early lead it would never relinquish as it took the set 25-21.
• The Hawks played from behind for most of the fourth set, before making an exciting late run. Facing a 23-19 deficit, kills by Teets and Gladwill, tied the set at 23 apiece. Another timely kill by Teets, followed by a triple block by Oxley, Gladwill and Lowery in the middle scored the match-tying point, 25-23.
• Saint Anselm appeared in control early in the deciding fifth set, holding two-point leads at 5-3, 6-4, and 7-5. Then the serve-receive game broke down a bit, forcing the Hawks out of system and giving up four straight points. After a sideout, kills by Williams and Teets made it 10-9 Saint Anselm, but clutch putaways by the Penmen scored four straight to take a commanding 13-9 lead and inducing a Hawk timeout. Williams responded with a kill, but with match point on the line, the Hawks came up just one long rally short as a stuff block sealed the match for the hosts.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

• Saint Anselm outhit SNHU .221 to .185 on the evening, yet the Penmen recorded 63 kills to the Hawks' 60.
• The Hawks posted a season-high 14 blocks on the evening, compared to SNHU's nine.
• Service errors plagued the Hawks at several times throughout the match, as the Hawks posted a season-high 16 miscues from the endline.
• Neither team led by more than five points the entire night—Southern New Hampshire held it in sets one, three and four. Saint Anselm's largest lead of three came in the first and second sets.
