MANCHESTER, N.H. – Freshman Emmet O'Callaghan (Weymouth, Mass.) scored a pair of second-half goals, but the Saint Anselm College men's soccer team dropped a 6-2 decision in its 2015 season finale to Northeast-10 Conference rival Stonehill College Friday afternoon at Melucci Field.
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
• O'Callaghan's two goals upped his season tally to five for 10 total points—the most on the Saint Anselm side. The pair of putaways was his first point since another two-goal effort back on Sept. 12, snapping a 13-game scoring drought.
• Senior Colin Mahoney (Peabody, Mass.) and junior Zachary Heckt (South Windsor, Conn.) each collected an assist on O'Callaghan's goals. It was the first assist of the season for Mahoney and the third for Heckt.
• Junior Stephen McLeod (Chelmsford, Mass.) picked up five saves, falling to 2-11-2 on the season.
For the Skyhawks…
• Adam Branco recorded a hat trick for the Skyhawks while Drew Montano added a pair and Trevor Torres netted his first season goal in the six-goal outburst.
• Conor McDonough tallied four saves for Stonehill.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Branco's breakthrough in the 18th minute of the first half was the only score of the first half as the teams played relatively even soccer. A frantic defensive clear from the goal line was sent to the top of the 18, finding Branco's boot to put the Skyhawks up 1-0 at the half.
• Branco was a bit more creative with his second goal, shaking a defender and McLeod before stuffing home a goal from point blank in the 61st minute.
• Montano then got into the act with a deep crack from way outside the box, rocketing into the upper right side to hand the visitors a commanding 3-0 lead in the 61st minute.
• Saint Anselm awoke at the 72:16 mark as Mahoney played the ball up the right side to a streaking O'Callaghan. The rookie corralled, turned, and fired into the left netting to make it 3-1.
• Just over a minute later, Branco then created another beautiful opportunity, playing past a Saint Anselm defender and tucking it just around an outstretched McLeod inside the right post.
• Heckt then played the ball up the right side and from the end line served a magisterial lateral to O'Callaghan on the left post to make it 4-2 at 77:18.
• Montano then converted on a penalty kick forty seconds later, and Torres found a high bouncing ball in traffic, turned and scored to push the final deficit to 6-2.
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE
• As it has often this season, Saint Anselm actually outshot its opponent Friday, owning a 17-13 advantage in total shots. However, 11 of Stonehill's attacks were put on target compared to just six for the Hawks.
• The Hawks held a slim 4-3 edge in corner kicks, including a 3-0 advantage in the second half alone.
NOTES
• The six-member Saint Anselm College men's soccer class of 2016 was recognized prior to the game, including Mahoney, AJ MacDougall (Newburyport, Mass.), Ben Mack (Melrose, Mass.), Sam Paul (Winchester, Mass.), Sean Smith (Hampstead, N.H.) and Ian Theriault (Merrimack, N.H.).
• Stonehill improves to 21-34 all-time against the Hawks.
• Saint Anselm closes out its season with a 3-12-2 overall record, picking up its three wins in the first three contests of the season.
• The Hawks also match their longest winless streak in program history. Saint Anselm went 0-13 to close out 2013 and lost the season-opener in 2014 to go 0-14 over that stretch.
UP NEXT
• Saint Anselm concluded its 2015 regular season with Friday's contest.
