Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

#3 SNHU Breezes Past Men's Soccer, 4-1

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Junior Ken Desmarais (Londonderry, N.H.) scored his first goal of the season with an assist by classmate Eddie Conroy (Portsmouth, N.H.) but the Saint Anselm College men's soccer team ran into a No. 3-ranked Southern New Hampshire University buzzsaw Wednesday evening, falling to the host Penmen 4-1 at Larkin Field.

STANDOUT PERFORMERS

• Desmarais scored his first season goal, upping his season point tally to three after an assist earlier this season.
• Conroy's assist was his fourth of the season—one behind team-leading sophomore Jack Heintzelman (Middleton, Mass.)—and his third assist over the past four games.
• Junior Stephen McLeod (Chelmsford, Mass.) picked up four saves for the Hawks while dropping to 2-7-1 in his 10 season starts.
For the Penmen…
• Sofiane Tergou led the Penmen with a goal and two assists for a four-point outing.
• Sebastian Stezweski, Nate Horton and Julian Omeally all added a goal of their own on the evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED

• SNHU capitalized on a penalty kick after Orri Gustafsson was taken down by a Saint Anselm defender on a breakaway just inside the penalty box. McLeod chose the correct side, but Tergou tucked it just inside the right post to take a 1-0 lead.
• Stezewski then headed home a beautiful cross from Tergou from the left flank.
• Less than 40 seconds later, SNHU's Nate Horton handled a ball in traffic fired a crack from the top of the box into the right post, off another Tergou assist.
• Julian O'Malley then knocked in the Penmen's fourth goal of the game in the 39th minute, beating two defenders on the left side and putting it away right post.
• Desmarais finally spoiled the shutout bid for the Penmen, knocking hope a deep crack from 20 yards out at the 66:47 mark in the second half.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

• The Penmen continuously pressured the Saint Anselm defense, pushing the ball ahead while accruing six offside calls in the first half alone.
• Saint Anselm mustered just two total shots on the evening—the first coming on a deep boot from junior Jack Lynch (Weymouth, Mass.) that sailed over the crossbar, and the second coming as Desmarais' goal.
• The Hawks did manage four corners on the evening, to the Penmen's six.

NOTES

• SNHU snags both points toward the Queen City Cup standings, as the Penmen take an 8-1 lead with just four fall events to be factored in.
• Southern New Hampshire University improves to 31-7-5 all-time against its crosstown rivals.
• The Penmen also keep its undefeated season intact, improving to 11-0 overall and 8-0 atop the Northeast-10 Conference standings.
• Saint Anselm's winless streak stretches to nine games, yet the Hawks have only been shut out once over that span.

UP NEXT

• Saint Anselm will finish up its week with another NE-10 matchup, traveling to Bentley University Friday afternoon. The Hawks and Falcons will kick off in a 3 p.m. start in Waltham, Mass.
