COLCHESTER, Vt. – The Saint Anselm Men's Soccer team fell in the opening round of the Catholic Cup Friday afternoon, dropping a 3-0 decision to host Saint Michael's College.
The teams played relatively even throughout the first half, as Saint Michael's (1-0) outshot Saint Anselm 5-4 in the period. However, a scramble in the box allowed Purple Knight forward Thomas Antensaye to break into the scoring column in the 35th minute to take a 1-0 lead into half.
Saint Michael's added two more goals in the 64th and 71st minutes to put the game out of reach from the young Hawks squad.
For the game, the Purple Knights outshot Saint Anselm 12-6, putting away all three of the shots on goal. The Saint Anselm freshman tandem of Jack Heintzelman (Middleton, Mass.) and Kyle Sisco (Southington, Conn.) put the only two shots on goal for the Hawks.
The loss sends Saint Anselm (0-1) into the Catholic Cup consolation game at 1:00 p.m. against Assumption College (0-1). Saint Michael's will take on Stonehill College (1-0) in the championship game.
