EASTON, Mass. – The Saint Anselm men's soccer team opened Northeast-10 play Tuesday at Stonehill, falling to the Skyhawks in a hard-fought 1-0 loss.
The Hawks were on the defensive for much of the game, as they were out-shot 25-5 and 14-2 in on-goal attempts. Two early scoring chances for Saint Anselm—one from junior Sean Smith (Hampstead, N.H.) in the fifth minute and a header from sophomore Jack Lynch (Weymouth, Mass.) in the 20th minute—were both stopped by the Skyhawk goalkeeper.
Saint Anselm (1-2, 0-1 Northeast-10) would take just one official shot in the second half, missing wide.
Senior goalkeeper Bret Macko (Bolton, Mass.) had one of the best games in his career Tuesday night, stopping 13 of 14 Skyhawk shots on goal. Macko, after giving up a clever score from Stonehill in the 78th minute, successfully saved a penalty kick less than two minutes later to keep the game within one goal.
After spending the first three weeks on the road, the Hawks will be back in action Saturday for their home opener against Le Moyne. Gametime is set for 1:00 p.m. at Saint Anselm's Melucci Field.
