MANCHESTER, N.H. – Junior pitcher Tayla Trask (Lincoln, Maine) gave up just two hits and struck out 12, while sophomore Julie LeClair (Taunton, Mass.) had a hit for the Hawks, but the Saint Anselm College softball team dropped Wednesday's 1-0 decision to Southern New Hampshire University at Penmen Field.
With the loss, the Hawks descend to 16-9 overall, 8-5 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while the Penmen improve to 20-10, 9-6 NE-10.
The Penmen strung together their only two hits of the game for a run in the third inning and that would be the deciding factor. Ali Maloof hit a triple to score Morgan Farmer to break the scoreless deadlock and give the Penmen a 1-0 lead.
Maloof pitched a one-hitter, striking out 13 for the Penmen.
Saint Anselm put together a two-out rally in the first to put runners on first and second, but Maloof worked a strikeout to end the inning and the Hawks left two on base.
The Hawks will return to action Thursday, April 16 at 3 p.m. when they play against Merrimack College on home turf at the South Athletic Fields. Saint Anselm play's host to Saint Michael's at 5 p.m. the same day.
