WORCESTER, Mass. – Junior Hannah Byrne (Lynn, Mass.) went 3-for-5 and senior Monique Gauthier (Canton, Conn.) added four hits as the Saint Anselm College softball team halved with Assumption College as part of a softball doubleheader at Assumption's Marois Field. The Hawks dropped the first game, 1-0, before taking the second, 5-0.
The Hawks will improve to 16-8 overall and 8-4 in the conference, while the Greyhounds drop to 9-15, 4-9 NE-10.
GAME ONE
Assumption pushed across the only run of the game when a Nikki Boris double plated Jess DiPilato. The Hawks threatened in both the second and third, but each time a pair of runners were left on base. Saint Anselm had the game-tying run on second base in the seventh, but she was gunned down at home for the third out of the game.
Sophomore Julie LeClair (Taunton, Mass.) was 3-for-3 with a double. Junior pitcher Tayla Trask (Lincoln, Maine), who came into the game at 11-0, was handed her first loss of the season as she threw the complete game, giving up five hits and striking out one batter.
GAME TWO
The Hawks were backboned in the second game with strong pitching from junior Paige Cormier (Rochester, N.H.). Cormier scattered three hits over seven innings pitched by striking out two batters and walking none. Byrne was 3-for-3, while Gauthier was 3-for-4 with a home run.
Gauthier struck with the home run in the Hawks' first at bat when she laced the ball over the field in center field. Sophomore Emily Crannell (Wilmington, Mass.), who reached with a single, crossed the plate along with Gauthier. Saint Anselm doubled up its lead in the third when senior Gina Treglia (Fairfield, Conn.) and Byrne put together back-to-back singles for a pair of runs.
Saint Anselm tacked on its last run when Byrne scored on a single from junior Kasey Moran (Medford, Mass.).
The Hawks will return to action Tuesday, April 15 as they travel to Saint Michael's for a 4 p.m. contest.
