MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College women's tennis team captured its first victory of the season with a 5-4 win against Franklin Pierce University on Wednesday afternoon at the Carr Center.
The Hawks improve to 1-6 on the season and in Northeast-10 play, while the Ravens drop to 1-8, 1-8 NE-10.
Sophomore Kathryn Rindo (Lowell, Mass.) won a pivotal match at No. 2 singles against Kirby Melbourne. Rindo took the first set, 6-4, before Melbourne came back to even things with a 6-3 win. Rindo then answered to pull out a 7-5 victory in the third set to come away with the match.
Classmate Courtney Russell (North Reading, Mass.) cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 victory against Nicole Gilooly in No. 5 singles and fellow sophomore Emily Barrett (Hopedale, Mass.) defeated Lyla Austin in No. 6 singles action, 6-3, 6-4.
Juniors April Regan (Berlin, Conn.) and Kate Martin (Hudson, N.H.) teamed up for an 8-4 No. 2 doubles win against Melbourne and Leslie Rodgers, while seniors Katherine Morrissey (Sturbridge, Mass.) and Christine Woods (Wilmington, Mass.) posted an 8-1 victory against Gilooly and Christine Boulanger in No. 3 doubles action.
The Hawks return to action Saturday, March 29 at 1 p.m. as they travel to take on the University of New Haven.
