MANCHESTER, N.H. – Freshman Hannah Synnott (Montclair, N.J.) made 13 saves and three different Hawks scored a goal as the Saint Anselm College women's ice hockey team took down Franklin Pierce University, 3-1, Tuesday evening at Thomas F. Sullivan Arena for non-conference hockey action.
With the win, Saint Anselm grabs its fifth straight and improves to 20-3-0 overall, while the Ravens dip to 17-4-1 on the year.
Sophomore Alex Kazmer (Crystal Lake, Ill.) drew first blood for the Hawks when she jammed the puck into the net at the left post after receiving a pass from freshman Alison Quinn (Canton, Mass.) at 8:56 of the opening period. Sophomore Jessica Galiczewski (Kings Park, N.Y.) initiated the play with a shot from the left point, before Quinn picked up the rebound, skated behind the net and dished it to Kazmer in the left corner.
Saint Anselm went up 2-0 at 15:07 when freshman Alexandra Starzyk (Enfield, Conn.) picked up a Franklin Pierce turnover and plowed through the Raven defense before flipping the puck into the top left corner of the net.
Franklin Pierce gained one back with 1:43 left in the period, however, when Bryana Harron broke away from the pack and sent a backward pass to Francesca Paciello and she sent a wrist shot from the high slot that trickled off the shoulder of Synnott and into the net. Jamie Wiley also picked up an assist on the play.
The middle period saw no scoring action, but six penalties. The Hawks went 0-for-1 with the extra-man, while the Ravens were 0-for-5 and forced Saint Anselm to burn off a 5-on-3 opportunity.
Sophomore Sarah Geisinger (Willoughby, Ohio) put the Hawks back on top by two, 3-1, when she struck on a Saint Anselm power-play at 12:19 of the third. Geisinger slapped the puck into the back of the net from the top of the crease as she took advantage of assists from Kazmer and senior Andi Foss (Elko, Minn.).
Franklin Pierce goaltender Shannon O'Neil made 26 saves and was dished her first loss of the season. The Hawks held a 29-14 edge in shots on goal. Saint Anselm wound up 1-for-3 on the power play, while Franklin Pierce was 0-for-6 with the extra skater.
This was the final contest at Sullivan Arena for seniors Courtney Winters (Swampscott, Mass.), Jacqueline Bouchie (Belmont, Mass.) and Foss.
