Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Men's Hockey Upended by Beacons, 3-1

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Senior forward Sean Jenkins (Boston, Mass.) scored the Hawks' first goal of the season, but the Saint Anselm men's hockey team's late flurry came up short Saturday night, falling to Massachusetts-Boston, 3-1, at Sullivan Arena.

The loss drops the Hawks to 0-2 both overall and in ECAC East play, while the Beacons improved to 4-0 and 2-0, respectively.

After UMB broke open the game with a pair of first period goals scored just 18 seconds apart, Saint Anselm took to the offensive. The Hawks outshot UMass-Boston 39-33 for the game, including a 19-8 advantage in the second period alone.

The Beacons tacked on another goal early in the third period before the Hawks pulled freshman goaltender Shane Joyce (Pembroke, Mass.) with 3:10 remaining. The Hawks, who had possessed the puck for much of the game, held the Beacons scoreless and put the pressure on the UMB defense before finally breaking through with Jenkins' goal off assists from Kody Grondin (Hampton, N.H.) and senior Johnny Daniels (Andover, Mass.).

Joyce recorded 30 saves between the pipes while taking his first loss.

The Hawks will take to the road this upcoming weekend, traveling to the Adirondack-Green Mountain region Vermont and upstate New York for another tough two-game slate. The Hawks will battle Castleton Friday evening before taking on Skidmore Saturday afternoon.
