SHIRLEY, N.Y. – Freshman Emma Kincaid (W. Bridgewater, Mass.) and sophomore Rose Mooney (No. Attleborough, Mass.) scored 36 seconds apart late in the game to send the Saint Anselm College field hockey team to a 2-1 win against Dowling College on Saturday afternoon at Golden Lions Field.
The Hawks snap a three-game skid to improve to 7-7 on the season, while the Golden Lions sink to 3-13.
Following a scoreless opening stanza, Dowling grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 56th minute as Melissa Fuerst found Jennifer Edward, who tapped the ball in after a scramble in front of the cage.
Saint Anselm responded by knotting the game just 1:14 later at the 56:30 mark when Kincaid scored the second goal of her career off a deflection to pull the Hawks even. They were not done, however, as 36 seconds later Mooney put a long shot from the top of the arc past Dowling goalkeeper Ariana Ovadia to go up 2-1.
The Hawks had to withstand four penalty corners from the Golden Lions over the final 13 minutes, but came away with the win.
"We did not play our best today," head coach Carolyn King said, "but I'm proud of the way we responded when Dowling scored and how we were able to grind it out."
Sophomore goalkeeper Katherine Sears (Northboro, Mass.) made four saves, while Ovadia stopped six shots.
Saint Anselm outshot Dowling, 21-12, and held an 11-9 edge in corners.
The Hawks return to action Sunday, Nov. 9 at noon when they jump back into Northeast-10 play against the fifth-ranked University of Long Island-LIU Post. The next and final home game for the Hawks is Wednesday, Nov. 12 at 4 p.m. when they play host to Franklin Pierce University on Senior Day at Grappone Stadium.
