BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – Sophomore Rose Mooney (No. Attleborough, Mass.) scored her second goal of the weekend, but the Saint Anselm College field hockey team was handed a 5-1 loss by the fifth-ranked University of Long Island-LIU Post on Sunday afternoon at Bethpage Federal Credit Union Stadium.
The Hawks, who posted a 3-2 overtime win at Grappone Stadium back on Sept. 19 against then-fourth-ranked LIU Post, drops to 7-8 on the season, including 2-7 in Northeast-10 play. The Pioneers, who have won 12 of 13 since that loss to Saint Anselm, including seven straight, improve to 14-2, 9-1 NE-10.
LIU grabbed an early 1-0 lead 9:11 into the contest when Keliann Margiotta set up Stephanie Ruhle for the game's first tally. The Pioneers then doubled their lead late in the 25th minute on a Lyn-Marie Wilson goal.
Saint Anselm would cut its deficit in half with just 41 seconds remaining in the opening stanza when Mooney, who scored the game winner in Saturday's 2-1 win at Dowling, put a shot past the left side of LIU Post goalkeeper Ericka Parks and into the back of the cage.
With the game seemingly headed to halftime with the 2-1 score, the Pioneers added an absolute back-breaker of a goal as Wilson struck again with the clock reading zeroes as the teams played out a penalty corner. Margiotta and Kaycee Zelkovsky were credited with assists on the play.
The game stayed at 3-1until midway through the 62nd minute when Wilson received a feed from Dani Crouse and beat sophomore goalkeeper Katherine Sears (Northboro, Mass.) to stretch the advantage to 4-1. Wilson then scored her fourth of the day early in the 65th minute to close the scoring.
Sears turned away five shots for the Hawks, while Parks made one save.
The Pioneers outshot Saint Anselm, 20-3, including 13-2 in the opening frame, and also held a 14-1 advantage in corners.
The Hawks are back in action Wednesday, Nov. 12 at 4 p.m. when they play host to Franklin Pierce University on Senior Day in their home finale at Grappone Stadium.
