Women's Soccer Picks Up a Point in 1-1 Merrimack Tie

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – Two quick scores made for a long night Tuesday as the Saint Anselm women's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw at Merrimack at Martone-Mejail Field.

Merrimack (5-3-2, 2-3-2 Northeast-10) got the scoring going early on, scoring on a breakaway goal in the eighth minute to take a 1-0 lead.

Though Saint Anselm sophomore Kendra Bonczar (Milford, N.H.) was there for the equalizer, scoring her first goal of the season from 10 yards out in the 28th minute.

Bonczar threatened on several more occasions throughout the game, including on a dramatic would-be game-winner in the second overtime in which the final Merrimack back cleared the ball from harm in the 108th minute.

Statistically, the evenly matched teams played nearly identical soccer in front of the crowd of 215 attendees. The Hawks outshot Merrimack just 21 to 18 and took only three more corners than the host Warriors.

Sophomore goalkeeper Cassie Quattropani (East Hartford, Conn.) tallied seven saves on the night, bringing her season record to 3-2-3 overall.

Saint Anselm finishes up a tough three-game Northeast-10 Conference road trip with a 0-1-2 record, maintaining their placement in the middle of the heated league race. The Hawks return to Melucci Field Saturday in another huge matchup against top-ranked Saint Rose in a 2 p.m. start.
