Women's Hockey Scores Three Unanswered in 3-2 OT Win at Manhattanville

STAMFORD, Conn. – Freshman Alison Quinn (Canton, Mass.) scored with 1:22 remaining in overtime to lift the Saint Anselm College women's ice hockey team to a 3-2 come-from-behind victory against Manhattanville College on Friday afternoon at Terry Conners Rink.

The Hawks improve to 16-3-0 on the season, including 9-2-0 in ECAC East play, while the Valiants drop to 7-10-3, 5-4-2 ECAC after being handed their second 3-2 loss of the season by Saint Anselm.

Trailing, 2-0, with 7:41 left in the second period, the Hawks finally broke through against Manhattanville goaltender Kirsten Shaughnessy when senior Courtney Winters (Swampscott, Mass.) collected her own rebound and put the puck into the back of the net for a power-play tally that cut the deficit in half.

It remained a 2-1 game deep into the third period when sophomore Halle Kent (Lake Placid, N.Y.) snapped off a shot from the high slot that careened through traffic and past Shaughnessy on her high-blocker side to knot things up with 4:25 to play in regulation. Freshman Alison Butler (Danvers, Mass.) and junior Tiffany Herron (Clinton Township, Mich.) earned assists on the play.

Saint Anselm was outshooting Manhattanville, 5-0, in the extra session when Quinn's shot from the low slot sailed over Shaughnessy's glove to end the contest at 3:38 of the overtime period.

The Hawks held a 43-12 advantage in shots, including 15-3 in the third period and overtime, combined. Freshman goaltender Hannah Synnott (Montclair, N.J.) made 10 saves to improve to 7-0-0 on the season, while Shaughnessy stopped 40 shots. Both teams were 1-for-8 with the extra skater.

Despite being outshot 14-2 in the first 18 minutes of the game, Manhattanville was able to score on consecutive shots in the final two minutes of the opening frame. The Valiants went up 1-0 with 1:32 left in the period as Aubrey Bachand threw a puck in front from behind the net that deflected off the stick of a Saint Anselm defender and past Synnott. Sydney Asselstine assisted on the score.

Manhattanville struck again just 1:06 later on a power-play goal by Alla Traun, who toe dragged through a defender, skated hard toward the net and fired a shot over the glove of Synnott to make it 2-0. Trenah Stauffer and Michele Meggiolaro were credited with assists on the play.

The Hawks return to action Saturday, Feb. 1 at 4:40 p.m. when they take on Nichols College. The next home game for the Hawks is Friday, Feb. 7 at 4 p.m. when they play host to the College of the Holy Cross at Thomas F. Sullivan Arena.
