MANCHESTER, N.H.– Freshman John Rogeri (Katy, Texas) scored his first career goal, while junior Matt Buckley (Canton, Mass.) and freshman Nick Leonard (Methuen, Mass.) each scored the second of their careers as the Saint Anselm College men's ice hockey team played to a 3-3 tie with the University of Southern Maine Saturday afternoon at Thomas F. Sullivan Arena.
With the tie, Saint Anselm now stands at 5-5-3 overall and 3-3-3 in the ECAC East, while Southern Maine moves to 4-7-4, 3-5-1 ECAC East.
Rogeri was first to score for Saint Anselm when he picked up a pass from senior Greg Merrill (Brighton, Mich.) and flipped the puck past Southern Maine goaltender Josh Hillegas. Junior Johnny Daniels (Andover, Mass.) initiated the play and was credited with the secondary assist. USM leveled the game at one, however, with 3:09 remaining in the opening stanza as Zach Dymock picked up a pass from Ryan Seward and beat Saint Anselm goaltender Robert Kang (Glen Rock, N.J.).
After the break, USM jumped out of the gate, scoring 1:01 into the frame as Mike Greene converted a pass from Jeremy Griffin, who picked up a feed from Angelo Vrachnas. The Hawks had the answer, however, at 7:38 when Leonard was slid a pass from junior Kody Grondin (Hampton, N.H.) and he snuck the puck past Hillegas, evening the game back up at two apiece.
Saint Anselm took its second lead of the game at 5:19 of the final frame when Buckley went top shelf on Hillegas after he received a feed from Merrill. The Hawks did not hold on to the lead, though, as Dymock struck again with 1:32 remaining in the game, knotting things up at 3-all.
Neither team found the net in the overtime period, although the Hawks just missed on a pair of opportunities. First, senior Joe Tebano (Glastonbury, Conn.) carried the puck behind the net, just 20 seconds into the frame, and wrapped around the back of the net before firing a shot that ricocheted off the crossbar. Second, Tebano set up senior Kevin Vanous (Virginia Beach, Va.) on the right side of the net, but Vanous' point blank shot was save by Hillegas.
Kang made 27 saves over four periods, while Hillegas stopped 35 of 38 shots on goal. The Hawks held a 38-30 edge in shots.
The Hawks return to action Friday, Jan. 17 at 7 p.m. as they play host to UMass Boston. The Saint Anselm men's and women's hockey teams will be hosting their "Pink the Rink" initiative in support of breast cancer awareness Jan. 17-18.
