Softball Takes Pair of One-Run Games From Bentley

WALTHAM, Mass. – Lauren Galavotti (Marion, Mass.) went 3-for-4 with three RBI in game one and Nicole Boucher (Woonsocket, R.I) had three hits and two RBI in the second game as the Saint Anselm College softball team swept Bentley University, 9-8 (eight innings) and 4-3 Tuesday evening for Northeast-10 softball action.

With the pair of wins, the Hawks jump to 12-13 overall, while the Falcons dip to an 8-18 record for the 2013 campaign.

In game one, Bentley scored five runs in the bottom of the first, before the Hawks came out the next inning to come within one at 5-4. With one out, Olivia Story (Middleton, Mass.) doubled to right, followed by back-to-back singles from Pattie Turner (Warwick, R.I.) and Hannah Byrne (Lynn, Mass.). Next to bat was Hayley Lombard (Boynton Beach, Fla.), who reached on an error, but allowed Turner and Story to cross home plate.

Later in the inning, Galavotti tripled to left scoring two more runs.

The Falcons put up two runs in the fourth to give them a 7-4 lead, however, in their last at bat, the Hawks rallied to score four runs, giving them the 8-7 advantage.

Singles from Galavotti and Julie LeClair (Taunton, Mass.) knocked in two runs, coupled with a pair of sacrifice flies from Gina Treglia (Fairfield, Conn.) and Story put the Hawks back in the game.

Bentley scored one in the bottom of the seventh to force the tiebreak, in which Saint Anselm delivered in the top half of the extra inning.

With one out, Boucher tripled to center followed by a Galavotti single to right gave the Hawks the one-run cushion as it was Bentley's chance for the win.

Saint Anselm starting pitcher Tayla Trask (Lincoln, Maine) handed out two strikeouts in the final inning to seal the win for the Hawks.

In the second game, the Hawks jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the opening inning with a RBI triple from LeClair and a RBI single from Treglia. The Falcons then took the lead at 3-2 in the bottom of the third.

Saint Anselm answered back its following at bat when Boucher cranked another triple to right scoring both Byrne and Story, taking back the lead at 4-3.

Starting pitcher Paige Cormier (Rochester, N.H.) threw seven innings, giving up two earned runs and striking out two.

The Hawks return to action Wednesday, April 10 at 3 p.m. when they hit the road and travel across New Hampshire to Franklin Pierce University for a doubleheader.
