MANCHESTER, N.H. – Sophomore Bobby Carkhuff (Amherst, Mass.) drove in a pair of runs as the Saint Anselm College baseball team closed out its season with a 10-5 loss to Franklin Pierce University on Tuesday afternoon at Sullivan Park.
The Hawks complete their 2013 slate at 18-28-1 overall, including 14-15 in Northeast-10 play and 7-14 in the Northeast Division. The Ravens improve to 29-15, 19-6 NE-10, 12-6 NE-10 NE.
John Razzino staked Franklin Pierce to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second with an RBI double to right. The Ravens then added two more in the third to expand their lead to three. The Hawks grabbed one back in the bottom of the frame as back-to-back two-out doubles by senior Robert Kelly (Aurora, Colo.) and sophomore Mike Hayden (Cranston, R.I.) produced Saint Anselm's first run of the day.
Calvin Grave's RBI single to left in the fourth put Franklin Pierce on top, 4-1, but senior Rett Ostafin (Port St. Lucie, Fla.) led off the bottom of the inning with the third home run of his career, including his second this season.
Nick LaCroix's three-run shot to left in the sixth, however, highlighted a five-run inning that opened the Ravens' lead to 9-2. Saint Anselm scraped two across in the sixth on an error and a Carkhuff RBI single to left that pulled it within five. The Hawks got another back in the eighth when Ostafin led off with a double to center, moved to third on a fly out and scored on Carkhuff's base hit to center that sliced it to 9-5.
Justin Brock's RBI single up the middle in the ninth answered that run and re-established Franklin Pierce's five-run cushion.
Freshman Tyler Buck (Franklin, Mass.) drew the second start of his career and lasted 5.1 innings, allowing nine runs – five earned – on eight hits and four walks, while striking out a batter. Classmate Paul Trabucco (Salem, N.H.) retired the two batters he faced, while fellow freshman Terrence Walsh (Milton, Mass.) worked 3.0 innings and gave up just one run – none earned – on two hits and a trio of walks.
Ostafin (RBI, 3 R) and Carkhuff (2 RBI) were both 2-for-3. Hayden went 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Kelly was 2-for-5 and scored a run.
This marked the final game for seniors Kelly, Ostafin, Richie Manzi (Plymouth, Mass.), James Farrington (West Milford, N.J.) and William O'Connor (Worcester, Mass.).
