MANCHESTER, N.H. – In her first start of the season, senior Shannon Dalton (Concord, Mass.) went six innings and did not allow an earned run as the Saint Anselm College softball team closed out its regular season with a 3-2 victory against Stonehill College on Sunday afternoon at South Athletic Field on Senior Day.
The Hawks improve to 22-20 on the season and wrap up their Northeast-10 slate at 17-12, including 14-7 in the Northeast Division. Stonehill drops to 24-24-1, 16-12-1 NE-10, 11-9-1 NE-10 NE. Third-seeded Saint Anselm will make its first Northeast-10 Championship appearance since 2008 when it plays host to No. 4 Stonehill in the first round Tuesday, April 30 at 3 p.m.
The game was deadlocked at zero until the third inning when a leadoff walk from junior Olivia Story (Middleton, Mass.) and singles by sophomore Hayley Lombard (Boynton Beach, Fla.) and senior Lauren Galavotti (Marion, Mass.) loaded the bases. Freshman Pattie Turner (Warwick, R.I.), junior Monique Gauthier (Canton, Conn.) and sophomore Hannah Byrne (Lynn, Mass.) then followed with three straight RBI singles that opened the Saint Anselm lead to 3-0.
Dalton continued to cruise as she faced the minimum over the next two innings before running into some trouble in the sixth after a fielding error brought in Stonehill's first run and set up its second. Dalton made it out of the inning with the lead, however, and handed the game to sophomore Tayla Trask (Lincoln, Maine), who worked around another fielding error in the seventh to nail down her second save of the season.
Dalton (1-0) allowed two runs – none earned – on four hits, while striking out six and not walking a batter over her 6.0 innings. Trask tossed a hitless inning and recorded a strikeout.
Galavotti (R) and Gauthier (RBI) were both 2-for-3, while Byrne and Turner went 1-for-2 with an RBI.
Dalton and Galavotti were honored in a ceremony prior to the game.
