MANCHESTER, N.H. – Sophomore David Kent (N. Falmouth, Mass.) allowed one run over 8.0 innings, but the Saint Anselm College baseball team was edged by Merrimack College, 1-0, Saturday afternoon at Sullivan Park. With the field not playable by noon due to the overnight rain, the first game was postponed and will be made up as part of a Sunday doubleheader.
The Hawks drop to 15-21-1 overall, including 10-11 in Northeast-10 play and 4-9 in the Northeast Division. The Warriors snap a seven-game skid and improve to 18-13, 10-8 NE-10, 5-5 NE-10 NE.
Merrimack moved right out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Casey Cotter led off with a double to right, moved to third on Mike Forgione's sacrifice bunt and scored when Mark O'Flynn singled to right.
The Hawks left a runner at second or third in five different innings – including the sixth and eighth when they had a pair in scoring position with one out – and stranded 10 overall.
Kent (5-2) allowed one run on 10 hits, while striking out four and walking none. Senior William O'Connor (Worcester, Mass.) used nine pitches to toss a scoreless ninth.
Sophomore Mike Hayden (Cranston, R.I.) went 1-for-2 with a walk, while senior Robert Kelly (Aurora, Colo.) was 1-for-3 with a walk and junior Dan Lagasse (Londonderry, N.H.) also went 1-for-3. Senior Richie Manzi (Plymouth, N.H.) and sophomore Joe Morin (Salem, N.H.) were both 1-for-4.
Alek Morency (4-3) threw seven shutout innings for Merrimack, allowing five hits, striking out eight and walking three.
