WINTER PARK, Fla. – Sophomore David Kent (North Falmouth, Mass.) tossed the first complete game of his career and was backed with a home run and two RBI from senior Rett Ostafin (Port St. Lucie, Fla.), as the Saint Anselm College baseball team closed out its spring break trip to Florida with a 4-1 victory against Rollins College on Saturday night at Alfond Stadium.
The Hawks wrap up their Florida trip at 3-7 and improve to 3-9-1 on the season, while the Tars, who handed Saint Anselm a pair of 12-2 losses earlier in the week, dip to 12-7.
Rollins moved out to a 1-0 lead in the third when Evan Rivera doubled to center and was immediately doubled home by Brian Lattanzi.
Saint Anselm tied it in the top of the fourth on a two-out solo shot to left by Ostafin. It was the second long ball of his career and the first since his freshman year.
The Hawks then went ahead, 2-1, in the fifth when freshman Allan McQuarrie (Salem, N.H.) singled to left, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by classmate Jack Hopkins (Brandywine, Md.), advanced to third on a fielder's choice grounder by senior Richie Manzi (Plymouth, N.H.) and scored on a throwing error by the third baseman.
The Hawks grabbed some insurance in the seventh. After Hopkins led off the inning by reaching on an error and going to second on a Manzi groundout, walks to senior Robert Kelly (Aurora, Colo.) and sophomore Mike Hayden (Cranston, R.I.) loaded the bases. Junior Dan Lagasse (Londonderry, N.H.) then drew the third straight walk to push across a run and Ostafin was hit by a pitch to force in another that widened the gap to 4-1.
Kent (2-0) allowed one run, while scattering 10 hits, struck out five and did not walk a batter.
Ostafin was 2-for-3 with a run scored, while Hopkins was 2-for-4 with a run and Manzi was 2-for-5.
The Hawks return to action Saturday, March 16 at noon as they take on Saint Thomas Aquinas College in doubleheader action.
