Stonehill Jumps Out To Early Lead On Baseball, Holds On For 13-7 Win

WINTER PARK, Fla. – Senior Robert Kelly (Aurora, Colo.) went 3-for-5 and drove in a run, but the Saint Anselm College baseball team suffered a 13-7 loss against Stonehill College on Monday afternoon at Rollins College's Alfond Stadium.

The Hawks drop to 2-4-1 on the young season, while the Skyhawks improve to 7-1.

Stonehill jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first against Saint Anselm starter, freshman Seve Llanio (Glen Arm, Md.), on a two-run double down the right field line by Anthony Pagano. The Hawks answered in the bottom of the second when sophomore Joe Morin (Salem, N.H.) doubled home junior Dan Lagasse (Londonderry, N.H.), who reached on an error and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by senior Rett Ostafin (Port St. Lucie, Fla.).

Brian Campbell made it 4-1 in the third when his double down the left field line brought in two. The Skyhawks increased their lead again the following inning as they pushed two unearned runs across to widen the gap to 6-1. Stonehill then broke it open with four in the fifth on an RBI single from Chris Callahan, a sac fly by Christian Baglini and a two-run double by Billy Karalis. A Matt Anziano sac fly and a two-run single from Baglini made it 13-1 in the sixth.

The Hawks began to mount a comeback in the seventh with a pair of RBI singles from Kelly and classmate Richie Manzi (Plymouth, N.H.). Saint Anselm would add four more in the ninth on RBI singles by sophomores Mike Hayden (Cranston, R.I.) and Bobby Carkhuff (Amherst, Mass.), a bases-loaded walk by Lagasse and a sac fly from Morin.

Llanio (0-2) worked the first 3.1 innings and gave up six runs – four earned – on six hits and six walks, while striking out a pair. Senior William O'Connor (Worcester, Mass.) relinquished seven runs on five hits, while walking three and striking out two over 1.2 innings. Freshman Terrence Walsh (Milton, Mass.) tossed four shutout innings, allowing just three hits to go along with a pair of strikeouts.

Manzi was 2-for-4, while Morin, Lagasse and freshman Allan McQuarrie (Salem, N.H.) were all 1-for-3.

The Hawks return to action Tuesday, March 5 at 2:30 p.m. as they take on Assumption College at Alfond. In the nightcap, the Hawks will face off with Rollins at 6 p.m. Stay up-to-date with the latest news, including game previews and recaps, directly from the Saint Anselm College athletic department by liking us on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/STAHawks) and following us on Twitter (http://www.twitter.com/STAHawks).
