SYRACUSE, N.Y. –Junior Andrew Messner (Wakefield, R.I.) potted a pair of goals, but the Saint Anselm College men's lacrosse team fell to No. 1-nationally ranked Le Moyne College on Saturday afternoon by a score of 14-5 at Ted Grant Field.
With the loss, the Hawks will dip to 2-4 on the season and 2-2 in Northeast-10 play, while the Dolphins will improve to a near perfect 8-1 overall and 5-1 in NE-10 league play
The Hawks battled to a score of 1-1 after the first quarter of play. After being down 1-0, Messner scored his first of the game on a pass from junior Ryan Mee (Medway, Mass.) with 4:11 to play in the quarter, knotting the game at one apiece.
Le Moyne opened up the second with three unanswered goals, including two from Joe Corapi, to
bring the Dolphin lead to three at 4-1. Sophomore Andy Budz (Williamstown, Mass.) chipped in for the Hawks with his goal at 7:35 cutting the Le Moyne lead to two.
The Dolphins wrapped up scoring in the second with three more goals, extending their lead to five at a score of 7-2.
Saint Anselm opened up the third with back-to-back goals from Messner and Mee, putting the Hawks within three at 7-4. The Dolphins scored six straight to close the third, bringing the game to a score of 13-4.
Each team added another goal to their tally in the final quarter wrapping up scoring at 14-5. Junior Jake Mallinson (Middletown, R.I.) was last to score for the Hawks with his unassisted goal with three minutes left in the game.
Saint Anselm senior goalkeeper Jonathon O'Reilly (Plano, Texas) stopped 18 of 32 shots, while Le Moyne split time in net between Jeff White and Pat Brothers. White stopped four of eight shots, while Brothers was called upon to make one save.
The Hawks return to action Wednesday, April 3 at 7 p.m. when they return to Grappone Stadium and play host to cross-town rival Southern New Hampshire University.
