RINDGE, N.H. – Sophomore Allie Jones (So. Kingstown, R.I.) scored a team-high 14 points, but the Saint Anselm College women's basketball team fell to Franklin Pierce University, 67-47, at the Fieldhouse on Saturday afternoon.
The Hawks dip to 4-19 on the season, including 1-18 in Northeast-10 play, while the Ravens jump to 16-7, 13-6 NE-10.
Jones shot 7 of 9 from the floor and grabbed six rebounds. Junior Briana Jones (White Plains, N.Y.) was also in double figures with 12 points (5-11 FG; 2-3 FT) and seven boards.
Franklin Pierce jumped out to a 7-2 lead behind five points from Amanda Saab before a Briana Jones layup and a 3-pointer from junior Ashley Viselli (Groveland, Mass.) cut it to just a pair 5:18 in. The Ravens responded with an 8-0 run – with five points from Kara Charette – that widened their lead to 17-7 at the 12:51 mark.
The Hawks climbed back within 19-16 behind a pair of layups from Allie Jones and a 3-pointer from freshman Krista O'Gara (New Fairfield, Conn.). Saint Anselm was within one at 21-20 with 6:11 to go and went into the locker room trailing, 24-22.
Saint Anselm opened the second half on an 8-0 run to grab a 30-26 lead at the 16:17 mark. The Hawks still led 34-33 with 11:51 remaining when the Ravens ripped off a 17-2 run that made it 50-36 with 7:18 to play. Three players made up the run with Brittany Martelle leading the way with eight points, Kate McDonald scoring five and Charette adding four.
With the margin still 14 at 57-43 with 4:46 left, the Ravens used a 6-0 spurt – with a pair of layups from McDonald and one from Martelle – that pushed the lead to an even 20 with 2:48 to go.
Viselli filled the box score with seven points, eight rebounds, two assists, two blocks and a steal. Junior Meg Morrissey (So. Kingstown, R.I.) chipped in four points, five rebounds and four assists. Freshman Raquel Johnson (Long Beach, Calif.) added four points, four boards and three assists.
Franklin Pierce outshot Saint Anselm, 42.1 percent (24-57) to 36.4 percent (20-55), including 42.1 percent (8-19) to 25 percent (3-12) from beyond the arc. The Hawks held a 37-34 edge on the glass and outscored the Ravens in the paint, 32-30, but committed 16 turnovers, while FPU turned it over just eight times.
The Hawks return to action Wednesday, Feb. 20 at 5:30 p.m. when they travel to take on the University of Massachusetts Lowell. The next home game for the Hawks is Saturday, Feb. 23 at 1:30 p.m. when they play host to Saint Michael's College at Stoutenburgh Gymnasium.
