Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Balanced Scoring Helps Men's Hockey Roll Past Assumption, 5-0

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Five different Hawks scored a goal, with junior Johnny Daniels (Andover, Mass.), senior Kevin Vanous (Virginia Beach, Va.), junior Sean Jenkins (Boston, Mass.) and sophomore Bryan Sullivan (Burlington, Mass.) contributing multiple points as the Saint Anselm College men's hockey team produced a 5-0 win over Assumption College on Wednesday night in Northeast-10 men's hockey action.

Saint Anselm captures its second straight win to improve to 2-3-2 and 2-0-0 in the NE-10, while the Greyhounds dip to 2-7-1 overall and 0-3-1 in the conference.

Daniels started the three-goal barrage to begin the game with his tally just 49 seconds into play. Daniels received a pass at the blue line of the Greyhound zone from Vanous and skated around the Assumption defense before sending a wrister into the top-right corner of the net.

Junior Matt Buckley (Canton, Mass.) doubled up Saint Anselm's lead at 13:26 when he buried the rebound off a Vanous saved shot at the right post. Jenkins was also assisting on the goal, which was the first of Buckley's career.

Just over a minute later, senior Eric Czapka (Holland, Pa.) picked up a pass from Sullivan and struck for the three-goal lead at 14:35. Sullivan won the draw and made a move towards the net before he passed the puck to Czapka at the near post and he snuck it between Assumption goaltender Bobby Bowden and the pipe.

The second period saw no scoring action from either team, despite the Hawks holding a 13-8 edge in shots on goal. Saint Anselm missed a chance with the extra skater and was able to stave off a pair of opportunities for the Greyhounds.

The Hawks scored a pair of goals in the third stanza, bringing the game to its final tally of 5-0. Jenkins was first to score at 6:17 as he ripped a shot at the pads of Nick Commesso at the left post and then looped around the back of the net and slapped another shot to bury in his own rebound for the 4-0 strike.

Senior Joe Tebano (Glastonbury, Conn.) was set up by Sullivan at 7:38 when he tapped in his short pass from the left. Sullivan gained the puck off the faceoff, took two strides and dished the puck to his right for Tebano, who shot the puck into the open net.

Saint Anselm senior goaltender Nick Dries (Commerce Township, Mich.) made 23 saves and earned his first shutout of the season, while Bowden made nine saves and Commesso stopped 26 shots. The Hawks held a 40-23 advantage in shots on goal. Neither team found the net on the power play as the Hawks were 0-for-4 and Assumption missed six extra-skater opportunities.

The Hawks return to action Friday, Dec. 6 at 7:30 p.m. when travel to New England College. Stay up-to-date with the latest news, including game previews and recaps, directly from the Saint Anselm College athletic department by liking us on Facebook and following us on Twitter @STAHawks.
