Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

#12 UMass Boston Steals 4-3 Overtime Victory From Men's Hockey

BOSTON – Junior Johnny Daniels (Andover, Mass.) potted a pair of goals, including a go-ahead tally with 13:50 left in regulation, but the Saint Anselm College men's ice hockey team suffered a 4-3 overtime loss to the 12th-ranked University of Massachusetts Boston on Saturday evening at the Clark Athletic Center.

The Hawks drop to 0-2, both on the season and in the ECAC East, while the Beacons improve to 2-1, 1-1 ECAC East.

Trailing 2-1 after Travis Daniel set up a Cody Dixon power-play tally just 12 seconds into the third period, Saint Anselm tied it up on a shorthanded goal by senior Joe Tebano (Glastonbury, Conn.) just 2:50 later.

Saint Anselm went ahead at 6:10 of the period when Daniels found the back of the net for the second time off a feed from junior Kody Grondin (Hampton, N.H.).

UMass Boston gained the equalizer, however, with 3:00 left in regulation as passes from Daniel and Frankie DeAugustine led to a Peter MacIntyre goal that made it 3-3.

The Beacons wasted no time in the extra session as Daniel buried a power-play chance just 42 seconds in off feeds from Jamie Finger and MacIntyre.

UMass Boston outshot Saint Anselm, 52-32, including 40-15 in the first and third periods combined.

Senior goaltender Robert Kang (Glen Rock, N.J.) made a career-high 48 saves, while UMass Boston goalie Zach Andrews stopped 32 shots.

Daniel started the scoring just 2:35 into the contest when he beat Kang with the help of assists from Nathan Milam and McIntyre.

Daniels evened the scoring at 11:10 of the second frame when he received the puck from senior Eric Czapka (Holland, Pa.) and snapped it past Andrews to knot things at 1-all.

The Hawks were 0-for-4 on the power play, while the Beacons were 2-for-10 with the man-advantage.

The Hawks return to action Friday, Nov. 15 at 7 p.m. when they open their 2013-14 home slate by playing host to Castleton College at Thomas F. Sullivan Arena.
