MANCHESTER, N.H. – Junior Tiffany Herron (Clinton Township, Mich.) recorded a goal and an assist, while sophomore Halle Kent (Lake Placid, N.Y.) handed out two assists, as the Saint Anselm College women's ice hockey team posted a convincing 5-1 non-conference victory against the University of New England on Monday night at Thomas F. Sullivan Arena.
The Hawks bump their record to 8-1-0 on the season, while the Nor'easters even theirs at 3-3-3.
Saint Anselm went on top 1-0 at the 11:24 mark of the opening period when Herron dished a centering pass from the bottom of the left circle to sophomore Sarah Geisinger (Willoughby, Ohio), who held the puck in front before dragging it to the far post and sliding it in past the outstretched right pad of UNE goaltender Sydney Helmbrecht.
The Nor'easters gained the equalizer at 2:17 of the second period as Shannon Reynolds won the puck out of the right corner to Mary Wirth, who wheeled around from the bottom of the right circle and snapped off a quick shot that trickled through the 5-hole of freshman goaltender Hannah Synnott (Montclair, N.J.) and off the inside of the far post. The officials huddled and signaled goal after a brief meeting.
The Hawks responded 1:35 later as sophomore Nina Gozzi (Suffield, Conn.) collected a loose puck behind the net and skated around past the right post before sliding a quick shot between the pads of Helmbrecht to make it 2-1. Freshman Chelsea Stanclift (Warren, Vt.) was credited with an assist on the play.
Senior Andi Foss (Elko, Minn.) added to the Saint Anselm lead at 5:23 when she led a 3-on-1 break up the ice, kept the puck herself and sniped the top-right corner of the net with a blistering wrist shot that stretched the lead to 3-1.
The hosts padded their lead at the 10:52 mark of the middle stanza as Kent connected on a pass from the top of the slot to the top of the left circle for Herron, who sent a shot through traffic, off a UNE defender and into the back of the net for the 4-1 advantage.
Saint Anselm broke it open at 7:18 of the third period when Kent's slapshot from the top of the slot was tipped in by senior Courtney Winters (Swampscott, Mass.) in the low slot. Sophomore Alex Kazmer (Crystal Lake, Ill.) also earned an assist on the play.
Synnott made 17 saves to remain perfect on the season at 3-0-0, while Helmbrecht stopped a whopping career-high 61 shots.
Saint Anselm held a massive 66-18 advantage in shots, including 30-7 in the middle period. The Hawks went 0-for-3 on the power play, while the Nor'easter came up empty in five extra-skater chances.
