Kazmer Pots Game Winner in 4-3 Overtime Battle with Salve Regina

MIDDLETON, R.I. – Sophomore Alex Kazmer (Crystal Lake, Ill.) scored with 27 seconds left in the overtime frame to lift the Saint Anselm College women's ice hockey team to a 4-3 victory over Salve Regina University on Friday night in ECAC Women's East ice hockey action.

With the win, the Hawks roll to their third straight victory, remaining unbeaten in the league at 4-0 with a 5-1 mark overall. Salve Regina drops to 2-3 overall and 1-3 in the league with the loss.

The Seahawks jumped out to an early lead as Sarah Markey scored her first goal of the season off a pass from classmate Michaela Chiuccariello, giving Salve Regina a 1-0 lead 9:51 into the first period.

Saint Anselm netted the equalizer 5:49 into the second period as sophomore Jessica Galiczewski (Kings Park, N.Y.) tied the game with a high slapshot over Seahawk goalie Colleen Marcik's right shoulder. Sophomore Nina Gozzi (Suffield, Conn.) was credited with the assist on the play.

The Seahawks wasted no time to earn the go-ahead goal as Chiuccariello added a tally of her own just over a minute later at 6:57.

With just under eight minutes to play in the middle frame, Gozzi was returned the favor from Galiczewski and she beat Marcik, tying things back up at two apiece. Senior defender Jacqueline Bouchie (Belmont, Mass.) was also responsible for a helper on the play.

Back-and-forth play would continue as sophomore Sarah Geisinger (Willoughby, Ohio) took advantage of the Hawks' power player and gave Saint Anselm its first lead of the game with a goal off passes from sophomore Halle Kent (Lake Placid, N.Y.) and junior Tiffany Herron (Clinton Township, Mich.). Markey added her second goal of the game, however, to knot the game at 3-3 with 7:04 to play in regulation

Saint Anselm junior goaltender Lindsey Brown (Mounds View, Minn.) came up with a few key saves at the end of the game to push the contest into overtime, where Kazmer earned the game-winning strike.

Brown made 20 saves, while Marcik stopped 27 of 30 shots on goal.

The Hawks return to action Saturday, Nov. 23 at 4 p.m. when they travel to take on rival Holy Cross. Stay up-to-date with the latest news, including game previews and recaps, directly from the Saint Anselm College athletic department by liking us on Facebook and following us on Twitter @STAHawks.
