Women's Soccer Knocks on the Door, but Falls to So. Connecticut, 2-0

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Suzane Pires notched a pair of goals to lead Southern Connecticut State University past the Saint Anselm College women's soccer team, 2-0, Saturday afternoon at Melucci Field.

The Hawks drop to 4-4-1 on the season, including 3-3-0 in Northeast-10 play, while the Owls improve to 3-6-1, 2-4-1 NE-10.

Pires staked the Owls to a 1-0 lead just one minute in when her shot from just outside the box beat junior goalkeeper Gabriella Primera (Kennett Square, Pa.) into the top right corner of the net.

The match stayed that way through the rest of the half until Southern Connecticut threatened again in the middle of the 56th minute when Christine Allard's shot looked to be heading top shelf before freshman goalkeeper Cassie Quattropani (East Hartford, Conn.) leapt and punched it over away over the crossbar.

The Owls did eventually add another early in the 58th minute as Pires' direct kick from 30 yards out snuck under the crossbar to widen the gap to 2-0.

Primera made one save in the first half of action, while Quattropani stopped two shots playing the entire second half. Southern Connecticut goalkeeper Camille Fantini stopped all eight shots to record the shutout.

Saint Anselm outshot Southern Connecticut, 17-8, including 8-2 in the opening stanza, while the Owls held a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks.

The Hawks return to action Tuesday, Oct. 8 at 4 p.m. when they play host to Merrimack College at Melucci.
