MANCHESTER, N.H. – Candace Waldie and Jessica Otis each recorded four points, while Christine Zubkus notched three assists as Merrimack College blanked the Saint Anselm College field hockey team, 5-0, Tuesday evening at Grappone Stadium.
The Hawks dip to 4-8, including 2-4 in Northeast-10 play, while the Warriors bump their record to 9-4, 5-1 NE-10.
Merrimack struck first just 6:41 into the contest when Zubkus' shot from the left side of the circle clanged off the near post and ricocheted out in front where Waldie collected the ball in traffic and sent it into the open net.
The Warriors made it 2-0 just under 16 minutes into the opening half as Zubkus inserted the ball off a corner play to Katrina Squeri, who settled the ball for an Otis shot that sailed through bodies from the top of the circle and into the right side of the cage.
The game stayed that way into the second half when Squeri collected a loose ball in a scrum out front and beat freshman goalkeeper Katherine Sears (Northboro, Mass.) to make it 3-0 just 4:24 into the second stanza.
Waldie widened the gap to four 1:13 later as she received a long pass up the right side from Otis and moved to the middle of the circle before sending a shot past Sears and into the right side.
Merrimack closed the scoring with 3:25 remaining when Otis settled Zubkus' corner insert and sent a drive to the right post that was tipped in by Katie Bishop.
Sears made six saves, while Merrimack goalkeeper Madison Davis also stopped six shots.
The Warriors outshot Saint Anselm, 13-11, including 7-2 in the opening stanza, and also held a 12-3 advantage in penalty corners.
The Hawks return to action Saturday, Oct. 19 at 1 p.m. when they hit the road to take on Adelphi University.
