Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

Third Period Rally Not Enough; Women's Hockey Falls to #7 Bowdoin, 4-3

MANCHESTER, N.H.Courtney Winters (Swampscott, Mass.) and Andi Foss (Elko, Minn.) each scored third period goals to attempt a comeback, but the Saint Anselm College women's hockey team fell to No. 7 Bowdoin College, 4-3, Tuesday afternoon at Thomas F. Sullivan Arena for non-conference action.

The Hawks were handed their third loss of the season and drop to 9-3-2, while the Polar Bears improve to 9-1-1 for the 2012-13 season.

Bowdoin was first to score just over four minutes into the game when Kayte Holtz sent a pass through the slot from left to right that found the stick of Kim Tess-Wanat, who one-timed the puck past Saint Anselm goalie Lindsey Brown (Mounds View, Minn.).

The Polar Bears increased their lead to two at 6:59 when Kenzie Novak rifled a shot from the left point that bounced off Brown's pads. Schuyler Nardelli picked up the rebound and shoveled it past Brown on her right side.

The Hawks found the net – coming within one – at the close of the first stanza when sophomore Tiffany Herron (Clinton Township, Mich.) sent the puck from behind the net into the crease where it found freshman Alex Kazmer (Crystal Lake, Ill.), on the right, who gave the Hawks their first tally of the afternoon.

The Polar Bears doubled their scoring total, to make the score 4-1, in the middle stanza as they picked up goals from Stephanie Ludy and Rachel Kennedy. Ludy scored at 10:52 when she sent a wrister into the left side that caromed around Brown's shoulder and into the net. Kennedy and Novak each picked up an assist on the play.

Kennedy netted a goal of her own and pushed the Polar Bear lead to three with 50 seconds remaining in the period when she broke through a pair of Saint Anselm defenders, deked Brown and sent the puck top shelf into the left corner. Novak notched her third helper of the day on the play.

Saint Anselm started its comeback 1:43 into the third period when Herron sent a centering pass towards Winters, who shot the puck at the net as it deflected off the skate of Bowdoin goaltender Tara Connolly.

Cutting the deficit to one at 19:14 of the final frame was Foss, who redirected a pass from Winters into the back of the net. Kathryn Picarello (West Roxbury, Mass.) also picked up an assist in the Hawks' third and final goal of the game.

Brown made 20 saves, while Connolly stopped 32 of 35 shots. The Hawks held a 35-24 advantage in shots on goal.

The Hawks return to action Saturday, Jan. 12 at 3 p.m. when they play host to UMass Boston at Thomas F. Sullivan Area.
