MANCHESTER, N.H. – Courtney Winters (Swampscott, Mass.) tallied three points and Tiffany Herron (Commerce Township, Mich.) added two as the Saint Anselm College women's ice hockey team played to a 4-0 victory over the University of Massachusetts Boston on Saturday afternoon at Thomas F. Sullivan Arena.
The Hawks move to 10-3-2 overall and 6-1-2 in ECAC Women's East play, while the Beacons fall to 5-9-1 and 3-5-1 in league play.
The opening period of play resulted in a score of 0-0, while Saint Anselm just outshot the Beacons by a 9-8 margin. Both teams were 0-2 on extra-skater opportunities.
Saint Anselm broke through in the second period scoring two goals and allowing none, as they took 13 shots.
At 5:34, Alex Kazmer (Crystal Springs) staked claim on a 1-0 lead for Saint Anselm as she flicked the rebound, off a Courtney Winters (Swampscott, Mass.) shot, into the left side of the net. Herron also picked up a helper on the play.
The Hawks extended their lead to two at 17:36 when Michelle Conway (Medford, Mass.) sent a shot rocketing at the net, followed her shot, and tipped in the loose puck that trickled around goaltender Casey Schaejbe.
When Hawks were ahead 1-0, Andi Foss (Elko, Minn.) sent a blast from the middle of the blue line that was tipped in at the left post by Winters. After a Hawk celebration, the ruling on the ice was no goal and the score remained 1-0.
Saint Anselm doubled up their lead in the third period with goals from Winters and Rosemarie Giarrusso (Royal Palm Beach, Fla.).
Winters earned her tally at 11:42 of the final stanza when she broke free from the pack on a breakaway, deked Schaejbe, and buried it into the back of the net. Herron recorded her second assist of the day on the play.
On the Saint Anselm power play, Giarrusso tipped in a shot from Kathryn Picarello (West Roxbury, Mass.) to give the Hawks a 4-0 lead with just under three minutes remaining. Winter was also credited with an assist on the Hawks' final goal of the game.
Saint Anselm goaltender Janice Michaud (Westwood, Mass.) picked up the win and her second shutout of the season by stopping 27 shots. Schaejbe made 35 saves in the loss.
The Hawks held a 39-27 edge in shots on goal, including 17-9 in the third period.
The Hawks return to action Saturday, Jan. 18 at 3 p.m. when they travel to the University of Southern Maine. The next home game for the Hawks is Jan. 25 when they play host to Manhattanville in a 4 p.m. puck drop.
