MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College men's ice hockey team fell to the Spartans of Castleton State College, 3-2, Saturday afternoon at Thomas F. Sullivan Arena thanks to a goal from Castleton's Brett Zeggil in the final 16 seconds of play.
Saint Anselm jumped out to a 1-0 lead at 11:11 when Johnny Daniels (Andover, Mass.) sent a pass from right to left through the slot to Bryan Sullivan (Burlington, Mass.), who one-timed the puck into the open left side of the net.
Castleton netted the equalizer at 6:59 of the second period when Ross Herzog picked up a rebound off the pads of Saint Anselm goaltender Robert Kang (Glen Rock, N.J.). Brian Greene took the initial shot that was saved by Kang before Herzog put away the rebound.
The Hawks came back with an answer of their own at the 9:18 mark of the second period. Jon Ahern (Melrose, Mass.) sent a shot toward the net that was redirected by Liam McKillop (New York, N.Y.) into the back of the cage, giving the Hawks a 2-1 lead.
The Spartans knotted it up again, this time at 2-2 9:33 into the final period. Dan Bell fed a centering pass to Josh Harris, who, with his back to the net, backhanded the puck up and over Kang's shoulder for the score.
With the game sitting in a 2-2 draw, Castleton snapped the deadlock as Zeggil skated down the right side and pushed the puck past Kang, giving the Spartans the go-ahead tally.
The Hawks did have a go-ahead chance at 8:25 when McKillop and Mike Richard (Derry, N.H) started a give-and-go as they skated down ice. McKillop sent a pass to the right where Richard's one-timer looked to be heading into the open net before Erick Cinotti slid and made the save.
Kang made 32 saves in the loss, while Cinotti stopped 16 of 18 shots.
The Hawks return to action Tues, Jan. 29 at 7 p.m. when they take the road and travel to Salem State.
