MANCHESTER, N.H. – Senior John Healy (Cranston, R.I.) gave up just one earned run over eight innings, but the Saint Anselm College baseball team was handed a 3-0 loss by Franklin Pierce University on Thursday evening in an NCAA East Regional matchup at Southern New Hampshire University's Penmen Field.
The fourth-seeded Hawks, who were playing in just their second NCAA Regional ever and first since 2004, drop to 28-24-2 on the season, while the third-seeded Ravens improve to 37-17-1. The Hawks will meet top-seeded SNHU on Friday at 3 p.m., needing a win to stay alive in the six-team double elimination tournament, while the Ravens will take on fifth-seeded Wilmington (Del.) University at 7 p.m.
Healy (8-2) suffered his first loss since March 22 – a 1-0 defeat at SNHU – as he went eight innings, allowing three runs – one earned – on seven hits, while striking out seven and not walking a batter. With his fifth strikeout of the game – and 96th of the season – he set a new program single-season record for punchouts. It was Healy's second complete game of the year.
Franklin Pierce jumped on the board in the first when Dan Hennigan led off the frame with a single through the right side, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, advanced to third on a fly ball to center and scored when the throw on a routine grounder to third by senior Jeffrey Criscuolo (Durham, Conn.) was mishandled at first.
The Ravens doubled their lead in the second when Isaac Wenrich singled up the middle with one out, stole second with two outs and then scored when the throw to first on a grounder to short skipped away.
The lead stretched to 3-0 in the fourth after Nick LaCroix singled to left-center, went to second on a sac bunt, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored when Healy could not cleanly field Wenrich's dribbler in front of the mound.
That was all the Ravens would need as Jack Crawford (7-2) shut down the Hawks, tossing a complete-game shutout as he allowed just three hits, struck out eight and did not issue a walk.
Junior Andrew Chandler (Westford, Mass.) and sophomore Nate Gonya (Wolfeboro, N.H.) were each 1-for-3, while sophomore Tito Lluberes (Lawrence, Mass.) went 1-for-4.
The Hawks return to action Friday, May 18 at 3 p.m. when they take on the Penmen as they face possible elimination.
