Baseball One-Hits Dominican (N.Y.) in 12-1 Victory

CHESTER, N.Y. – Seniors John Healy (Cranston, R.I.) and Timothy Cooney (E. Bridgewater, Mass.) combined on a one-hitter, and each batter drove in at least one run, as the Saint Anselm College baseball team recorded a 12-1 victory against Dominican (N.Y.) College on Saturday afternoon at the Rock Sports Park.

The Hawks, who win their third straight game to improve to 6-7, have scored 37 runs over their last three contests, which matches their offensive output through the first 10 games of the season. The Chargers drop to 1-5.

Andrew Camardella led off the top of the second inning with a solo home run down the left field line that made it 1-0 and would be Dominican's first and last hit of the afternoon.

The Hawks tied the game in the bottom of the third when senior Daniel DeCoste (Chelmsford, Mass.) came through with a two-out, bases loaded single that made it 1-1.

The game remained tied until the bottom of the sixth when sophomore Kyle Grumoli (So. Hadley, Mass.) drove in a pair of runs with a double to the left-center gap that made it 3-1.

Healey (3-0; 1.09 ERA) exited the game at the end of the half inning after six strong innings in which he allowed one run on one hit, while striking out eight and walking four.

Freshman Mike Hayden (Cranston, R.I.) provided some insurance in the seventh with a two-out solo shot to left – his first career home run.

The Hawks then broke it wide open with an eight-spot in the eighth. It was 5-1 when sophomore Tito Lluberes (Lawrence, Mass.) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Junior Richie Manzi (Plymouth, N.H.) made it 6-1 when he followed with an RBI single to right before classmate Robert Kelly (Aurora, Colo.) stretched it to 7-1 when he drew a bases loaded walk.

Hayden drove in Lluberes with a fielder's choice, before Manzi came around on an error to make it 9-1. An RBI single by sophomore Nate Gonya (Wolfeboro, N.H.) and a sac fly from classmate Dan Lagasse (Londonderry, N.H.) opened it up to 11-1 before junior Rett Ostafin (Avon, Conn.) closed the scoring with an RBI single up the middle.

Cooney worked the final three perfect innings and struck out a pair of batters.

Gonya went 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored, while Manzi was 2-for-5 with an RBI and a pair of runs scored. Hayden was 1-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Grumoli was also 1-for-4 with a pair of RBI and a run scored. DeCosted and Lagasse were both 1-for-2 with an RBI and a run, while Ostafin was 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run.

The Hawks return to action at 2 p.m. against Merrimack College before taking on Merrimack on Sunday at 11 a.m. and Dominican at 2 p.m.
