Zappen Extends Streak As Women's Ice Hockey Blanks Mules 5-0

MANCHESTER, N.H. –
Goaltender Amy Zappen (Huntington Beach, Calif.) delivered her third-straight shutout as the Saint Anselm College women's ice hockey program notched a 5-0 victory over the Mules of Colby College Tuesday evening at Thomas F. Sullivan Arena.  With the victory, the Hawks improve to 16-6-0 overall while remaining at 10-5-0 within the ECAC Women's East.  The Mules fall to 4-14-2 overall and maintain their 1-10-1 NESCAC record exiting play this evening.

By turning aside all 17 shots on goal, Zappen (13-6-0) collected her 13th victory of the season and her sixth shutout.  She has not allowed a goal in 187 minutes of play dating back to the third period of the Saturday, Jan. 28 game against the Bison of Nichols College.  In her last 263:10 minutes, Zappen has only allowed one goal, including the game against Manhattanville on Friday, Jan. 27.

On home ice at the Sullivan Arena, Zappen has not allowed a goal dating back to Friday, Jan. 6 against Saint Benedict, a span of 244:32 minutes.  As a team, the Hawks have not allowed a goal at home across a span of 304:32 minutes, as Zappen yielded to fellow goaltender Janice Michaud (Westwood, Mass.) on Saturday, Jan. 7 and posted a shutout of her own.  Saint Anselm has out-scored their opposition by a 42-to-10 margin on home ice throughout this season.

Forward Rosemarie Giarrusso (Royal Palm Beach, Fla.) scored the first goal of the game at 9:13 of the first period to open the scoring for either side.  Defenseman Angela Zevnik (Greenfield, Wisc.) fired the puck on net from the right point where it was knocked down in front in a mass of bodies.  After several shots on goal by the Hawks, the puck trickled out near the left post where a crashing Giarrusso forced home the rebound for her 10th goal of the season.  Forwards Ciara Petry (Poolesville, Md.) and Kathryn Picarello (West Roxbury, Mass.) collected assists on the game-winning goal.

Bridget Sylvester (Randolph, N.J.) scored her second goal of the season at 2:26 of the middle stanza, lifting the Hawks to a 2-0 lead.  Skating down behind the cage, defenseman Molly Corl (Georgetown, Mass.) flipped a quick feed out in front of the net to Sylvester, skating from right to left.  A quick flick of the wrist by Sylvester on the backhand beat Mules goaltender Brianne Wheeler for the score.

Giarrusso struck again at 11:36 of the second period, adding insurance goals for Saint Anselm near the midpoint of the second period.  Defenseman Sami Tatu (Waterford, Mich.) initiated the rush out of the Hawks defensive zone by connecting with Picarello, who crept into the offensive zone on a 2-on-1.  Her initial shot on goal was turned aside by Wheeler, but Giarrusso was following the play from behind and forced home the rebound for her 11th of the season.

With the Hawks on the penalty kill following a Casey Breese (Suffield, Conn.) tripping penalty, Picarello scored her sixth goal of the season shorthanded at 11:54 of the third period.  From below the goal line, forward Tiffany Herron (Clinton Township, Mich.) fed the puck from the left wing corner toward the right post in front where Picarello was positioned for the easy tap-in.

To conclude the scoring on the evening, defenseman Andi Foss (Elko, Minn.) scored her sixth goal of the season on the power play.  From right to left, forward Aly Zappen (Huntington Beach, Calif.) sent the puck toward the top of the slot where Zevnik was positioned.  A quick pass to her left caught the stick of Foss.  A powerful blast on goal could not be corralled by Wheeler as the Hawks took the 5-0 lead near the end of regulation time.

Wheeler (3-13-2) drew the loss in net for the Mules, turning aside 28-of-33 shots on net in the game.

Saint Anselm was 1-for-6 on the power play.  Colby was 0-for-4 with the extra skater.
