BOSTON, Mass. - The top line of left wing Rosemarie Giarrusso (Royal Palm Beach, Fla.), center Kathryn Picarello (West Roxbury, Mass.) and right wing Courtney Winters (Swampscott, Mass.) combined for 10 total points (5-5=10) as the Saint Anselm College women's ice hockey team posted a 5-1 victory over the Beacons of the University of Massachusetts at Boston Saturday afternoon. With the victory, the Hawks collect their 17th victory of the season to improve to 17-6-0 overall on the season alongside an 11-5-0 ECAC Women's East record. The Beacons have lost their third-straight game, falling to 7-13-2 overall and to 5-10-1 within conference play.
Winters' 16th goal of the season came at 16:06 of the first period to lift Saint Anselm to a 2-0 lead. Defenseman Jacqueline Bouchie (Belmont, Mass.) collected the assist on the play. Winters also struck at 8:30 of the first period to open the scoring with feeds coming from Picarello and Giarrusso.
Giarrusso potted her 12th goal of the season at 17:19 of the second period, extending the Hawks advantage to 3-1. Once again, Picarello and Winters collected helpers on the goal.
Picarello would add a goal of her own at 7:06 of the third period, placing the Hawks in front by a 4-1 spread. Defensemen Franny Nicholson (Saint Paul, Minn.) and Angela Zevnik (Greenfield, Wisc.) assisted Picarello's seventh goal of the season. Rounding out the afternoon's scoring was Giarrusso, potting her 13th goal of the year in the process. Picarello and Zevnik added assists on the final goal of the game.
For the Beacons, Katie Loiselle netted her third goal of the season at 1:39 of the second period to snap Saint Anselm goaltender Amy Zappen's (Huntington Beach, Calif.) at 208:39. She has not allowed a goal dating back to Jan. 28 against the Bison of Nichols College.
In this afternoon's contest, Zappen earned her 14th victory of the season, turning aside 12-of-13 shots on net. UMass Boston goaltender Leah Hallett drops her 12th decision of the season, halting 32-of-37 shots on goal in the game.
Both teams were 0-for-4 with the extra skater on the day.
