WINTER PARK, Fla. – Senior Sean Hayden (Haverhill, Mass.) gave up one run over six innings and freshman Mike Hayden (Cranston, R.I.) went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI, but the Saint Anselm College baseball team dropped a 4-3 decision against Rollins College as the team kicked off its week-long Flordia trip Saturday evening at Alfond Stadium.
The Hawks drop to 2-2 on the young season, while the Tars improve to 8-3.
Rollins broke a scoreless tie in the fifth when Nick Adams stroked a two-out RBI double that made it 1-0.
Saint Anselm responded with a three-spot in the following half inning. After walks to junior Robert Kelly (Aurora, Colo.) and senior Daniel DeCoste (Chelmsford, Mass.), a sacrifice by sophomore Dan Lagasse (Londonderry, N.H.) put runners at second and third with no one out. Jack Murray, who relieved starter Taylor Smith to face Lagasse, then recorded a strikeout, but Mike Hayden came through with a two-run single to center that gave the Hawks the lead. Hayden later came around to score when junior Rett Ostafin (Avon, Conn.) reached on an error and Saint Anselm led, 3-1.
Rollins sliced its deficit in half in the eighth when Sean Reilly hit a sac fly to right field.
The Tars were down to their final out with a runner on first in the ninth when they took advantage of two Saint Anselm errors to push across a pair of runs. Josh Band came around to score the tying run when Anthony Figliolia reached on an error. Rollins then walked off with the win when Kevin Mager drew a bases loaded walk.
Hayden gave up the one earned run in six innings on five hits, while striking out six and walking just one. Senior Timothy Cooney (E. Bridgewater, Mass.) went two innings, giving up one run – none earned – on two hits and a walk. Junior James Farrington (West Milford, N.J) took the loss as he worked 0.2 innings and gave up two runs – both unearned – on a hit and a walk. Sophomore Zachary Brian (Stoneham, Mass.) faced one batter and issued a walk.
Junior Richie Manzi (Plymouth, N.H.) went 2-for-5, while DeCoste was 1-for-1. Sophomore Nate Gonya (Wolfeboro, N.H.) had the other hit for the Hawks as he was 1-for-4.
The Hawks return to action Sunday, Feb. 26 at 6 p.m. when they play the second of three games against Rollins.
