Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Men's Ice Hockey Wins Wild Overtime Thriller at UMass Boston, 5-4

BOSTONTim King (Weymouth, Mass.) scored a pair of goals, including the game winner 31 seconds into the overtime period, to lift the Saint Anselm College men's ice hockey team to a thrilling 5-4 come-from-behind victory against the University of Massachusetts Boston on Saturday night at the Clark Athletic Center.

The Hawks improve to 2-0-0 both on the season and in the ECAC East, while the Deacons even their record at 1-1-0 on the season and in the league.

King added two assists for a four-point night, while Mike Richard (Derry, N.H.) matched that with a pair of third-period tallies that tied the game, as well as two assists, including one on the game winner.

In a contest that featured 33 penalties and an hour and 41 minutes of penalty time, Saint Anselm found itself trailing 4-2 with 4:52 remaining in the third period. Skating 4-on-4, the Hawks cut it to one when Richard beat Deacons goaltender Zach Andrews. Jon Ahern (Melrose, Mass.) and Alex Pascal (Blue Bell, Pa.) received assists on the play.

Richard struck again 1:03 later to tie the game on helpers from King and Ahern.

Max Reavis was then called for a tripping penalty with 35 seconds left in regulation, putting the Hawks on the power play. After the two teams skated out the rest of the period, Saint Anselm ended things 31 seconds into the extra session when King's shot hit Andrews' pad and hopped into the net. Richard and Liam McKillop (New York, N.Y.) were credited with assists on the play.

Saint Anselm goaltender Robert Kang (Glen Rock, N.J.) made 32 saves, including 12 each in the second and third periods, while Andrews stopped 27 shots.

The Hawks went 3-for-9 on the power play, while the Deacons, who outshot Saint Anselm, 36-32, were 2-for-5.

The Hawks jumped on the board first with a power-play goal 7:25 into the opening period when King wound up with a loose puck at the left post and put it past Andrews to make it 1-0. Richard and Greg Merrill (Brighton, Mich.) were credited with assists on the play after each snapped off shots just before the puck arrived on the stick of King.

UMass Boston tied it with 6:40 remaining in the opening period when Peter MacIntyre scored a power-play goal off feeds from Tim Richter and Kit Sitterley.

The Deacons went up by one on Mike Miller's short-handed goal 4:15 into the middle stanza. Connor McStravic earned an assist on the play.

Saint Anselm tied it with 7:14 to go in the second period when King earned his third assist of the year by setting up a Tucker Mullin (Andover, Mass.) goal.

UMB grabbed a 3-2 lead just 1:31 later when Sitterley streaked up the middle of the ice and ripped a shot off the glove off Kang and into the back of the net. Mike DeGrazia and Steve Weston were credited with helpers on the play.

DeGrazia then added a goal of his own with assists from Travis Daniel and Frankie DeAugustine to push the lead to 4-2 with 2:16 remaining in the second period.

The Hawks return to action Friday, Nov. 9 at 7 p.m. when they travel to take on Castleton State College.
