Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's Basketball Opens Season with 101-84 Victory Against Concordia (N.Y.)

ALBANY, N.Y. – Freshman Mike McCahey (Clarkstown, N.Y.) posted a double-double of 20 points and 13 rebounds in his first career game as the Saint Anselm College men's basketball team earned a 101-84 win against Concordia (N.Y.) College in its season opener Saturday in the first game of the Saint Rose Tip-Off Tournament at Nolan Gymnasium.

The Hawks start 1-0 for the first time in two seasons, while the Clippers drop to 0-1.

McCahey shot 7 of 14 from the floor, including 2 of 6 from behind the arc, while adding in three steals, a block and an assist. Junior Dominic Borelli (Westbrook, Maine) poured in a career-high 18 points on 9 of 13 shooting and ripped down seven boards. Classmate Dino Mallios (Winthrop, Mass.) scored 17 points – one shy of his career best – on 6 of 9 shooting from the floor, including 1 of 2 from deep, and dished eight assists.

Saint Anselm found itself down 9-1 out of the gate after Kyle Kube drained a 3-pointer 3:05 in. The lead was seven for Concordia at 17-10 when a Mallios layup and a 3 from junior John Nielsen (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) cut the deficit to two for the Hawks.

After the teams traded baskets, a Tshyrad Oates dunk put the Clippers up 21-17, but sophomore Chris Santo (Cherry Hill, N.J.) answered back with a 3 that pulled the Hawks to within one at 21-20 with 11:00 remaining in the opening half. Another Nielsen trey followed a Jamie Holder layup to knot the game at 23-all with 9:30 to play.

Sophomore Andre King (Springfield, Mass.) then gave the Hawks their first lead of the contest when he knocked down a jumper at the 9:12 mark. A Jahrod Lide three-point play re-gained the lead for Concordia on the ensuing trip down the floor, but a McCahey layup and a King 3-pointer put Saint Anselm on top, 30-26, with 8:04 to play in the half.

A Mallios layup at the 5:41 mark pushed the Saint Anselm lead to six at 37-31 before three straight Concordia points sliced its deficit in half. The Hawks still held a three-point lead when McCahey buried a 3 that made it 43-37 with just under four minutes to go in the opening half.

Jared Smith answered with a jumper and Argelix Gil later sank a 3-pointer to trim the Saint Anselm lead to just a point at 43-42 with 2:01 on the clock. The Hawks responded with 3-pointers from McCahey and Nielsen to take their biggest lead of the half at 49-42 with 44 seconds left. Kube then hit a 3 with 14 seconds on the clock, but Nielsen matched that as he buried another trey with three seconds remaining and the Hawks took a 52-45 lead into the break. McCahey and Nielsen each had 12 points at the half.

Mallios began the second stanza with a layup that nudged the lead to 54-45 just 58 seconds in. The lead was still nine nearly two and a half minutes later when sophomore Roy Mabrey (Belmar, N.J.) knocked down a pair of free throws to make it 61-50. After a Lide layup cut it to nine, back-to-back Borelli baskets opened the Saint Anselm lead up to 65-52 with 15:08 remaining.

The lead was later 12 when a 6-0 spurt for the Hawks gave them a 78-60 advantage with 11:21 to play. A McCahey jumper exactly a minute later widened the margin to an even 20 at 82-62. Still on top by 20 (92-72), two more Borelli layups gave the Hawks their biggest lead of the game at 96-72 with 4:31 left.

A 9-0 Concordia run, with five points from Norman Pope, would trim its deficit to 15 with 2:33 to go, but Mabrey stopped the bleeding with a 3-pointer at the 1:46 mark. Santo free throws provided points No. 100 and 101 with 58 ticks on the clock.

Santo scored 15 points on a perfect 4 of 4 shooting performance, including 2 of 2 from beyond the arc. Santo made five of his six free throws and added two rebounds and two assists in 16 minutes of action. Nielsen added 12 points on 4 of 9 shooting, including 4 of 8 from deep, to go along with four rebounds and an assist. King racked up eight points and two assists in seven minutes of action, while Mabrey added seven points, three rebounds, three assists and two steals.

The Hawks outshot the Clippers, 51.4 percent (37-72) to 48.4 percent (31-64), while Concordia made 52.6 percent (10-19) of its 3-pointers to 42.9 percent (12-28) for Saint Anselm. The Hawks held a slight 40-37 edge on the glass and turned the ball over 14 times, while forcing 17 Concordia turnovers.

Pope led four Clippers in double figures with 18 points.
