DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – Freshman Richelle Davis (Enfield, Conn.) notched her first career goal to lead the Saint Anselm College field hockey team to a 3-0 non-conference victory against Mercy College on Sunday afternoon at Mavericks Field.
The Hawks win for the third time in four games, including their second straight, to improve to 6-8, while the Mavericks drop to 1-9. The Hawks were playing for the second time in 24 hours after edging Adelphi University, 1-0, on Saturday.
Davis earned her first collegiate points and staked her squad to a 1-0 lead when she found the back of the cage – batting home a loose rebound – with 46 seconds left in the opening half.
The Hawks built on their lead in the 52nd minute when senior Kristina Katsikis (Hanover, Mass.) received a feed from freshman Canada Stewart (Derry, N.H.) and fired the ball past a pair of Mercy defenders, as well as goalkeeper Kristen Znaniecki, to make it 2-0.
Freshman Colleen Sears (Danvers, Mass.) iced the win with 1:28 on the clock as she collected the ball out of a scrum in front of the cage and put it past Znaniecki for the 3-0 cushion.
The Hawks held a whopping 18-1 advantage in shots, making easy work for senior goalkeeper Megan Sullivan (Braintree, Mass.) to earn the shutout as she was not forced to make a save. Znaniecki stopped seven shots.
Saint Anselm also owned the upper hand in penalty corners, 11-0.
The Hawks return to action Wednesday, Oct. 10 at 4 p.m. when they travel to take on American International College. The Hawks return home Saturday, Oct. 13 at 7 p.m. when they play host to Southern Connecticut State University under the lights at Grappone Stadium.
