SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Senior Kristina Katsikis (Franklin, Mass.) recorded her 26th career goal, but the Saint Anselm College field hockey team suffered a 3-1 loss against American International College on Wednesday afternoon at Abdow Field.
With the loss, the Hawks drop to 6-9 on the season, including 3-4 in Northeast-10 play, while the Yellow Jackets improve to 3-11, 2-4 NE-10.
AIC set the tone early as it scored just 1:12 into the game when Jenna Masionis set up Erica McLean to make it 1-0.
The Hawks responded just under two minutes later at the 3:06 mark when Katsikis received a feed from junior Elizabeth Sears (Danvers, Mass.) and beat AIC goalkeeper Kori Huffman to tie the game at one.
Lisa Duckles then potted her sixth goal of the year off an assist from McLean late in the 10th minute to give the Yellow Jackets a 2-1 advantage.
AIC would widen the gap to 3-1 late in the 20th minute when McLean earned her second assist of the day as she handed out a helper to Kristen Angeletti, who put the ball past freshman goalkeeper and Shauna Whittemore (Bennington, N.H.).
Whittemore, the reigning Northeast-10 Goalkeeper and Rookie of the Week, made a career-high 11 saves, while Huffman stopped seven shots.
Saint Anselm outshot the Yellow Jackets, 20-16, and also held an 11-6 advantage in corners.
The Hawks return to action Saturday, Oct. 13 at 7 p.m. when they play host to Southern Connecticut State University under the lights at Grappone Stadium on Senior Night. The Hawks will also be hosting their second annual "Corners for the Cure" to raise money and support for breast cancer awareness.
