WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Freshman Roy Mabrey (Belmar, N.J.) scored a game-high 22 points, but the Saint Anselm College men's basketball team dropped a 66-56 decision to the University of New Haven at Charger Gymnasium on Wednesday evening.

The Hawks, who lost for just the second time in their last eight games, drop to 8-10 on the season, including 6-8 in Northeast-10 play. The Chargers improve to 13-5, 9-5 NE-10.

Mabrey shot 9 of 14 from the field, including 3 of 7 from behind the arc, and 1 of 2 from the line, while adding a career-high seven rebounds, an assist and a steal. Senior Jack Keough (Owego, N.Y.) was also in double figures with 10 points on 3 of 10 shooting from the floor and 4 of 6 shooting at the stripe, while posting four rebounds, an assist and a steal.

Justin Exum scored the first five points of the game as the Chargers led 5-0 just 2:47 in. The lead was still five at 14-9 with 12:45 remaining in the opening half when sophomore Dominic Borelli (Westbrook, Maine) and Mabrey each scored three points as part of a 6-0 spurt that gave the Hawks their first lead of the night at 15-14 with 10:24 to play.

After an Exum trey gave the Chargers the lead again, a 3-pointer by freshman Andre King (Springfield, Mass.) sparked a 7-0 run that gave the Hawks a 22-17 lead with 7:34 to go. The lead was still five when a pair of free throws by junior James Morse (Arundel, Maine) closed the first-half scoring and sent the visitors into the locker room with a 32-25 lead.

A layup by sophomore Dino Mallios (Winthrop, Mass.), followed by a Mabrey 3-pointer, gave Saint Anselm its largest lead of the contest at 37-25 just 2:09 into the second half. With the lead at 11, 41-30, the Chargers responded with a 19-4 run – with seven points from Jeffery Adkins – that gave them a 49-45 advantage with 7:47 on the clock.

Four straight points from Keough knotted the game with 5:00 to play, but New Haven scored seven straight points to open a 56-49 lead with 2:08 remaining. The lead was still seven at 63-56 with 24 seconds left when Exum hit four free throws to close the scoring.

Morse and King each chipped in six points.

New Haven outshot Saint Anselm, 50 percent (25-50) to 40 percent (20-50), including 63.6 percent (14-22) to 36 percent (9-25) in the second half. The Chargers also held a 32-28 edge on the glass, as well as a 30-16 advantage in the paint.

Exum led the Chargers with 18 points.

The Hawks return to action Saturday, Jan. 28 at 3:30 p.m. when they play host to Adelphi University at Stoutenburgh Gymnasium.
