MANCHESTER, N.H. – Junior Kristina Katsikis (Hanover, Mass.) and sophomore Elizabeth Sears (Danvers, Mass.) scored goals 26 seconds apart to tie the game early in the second half, but the Saint Anselm College field hockey team fell to fourth-ranked Stonehill College, 3-2, in overtime Thursday at Grappone Stadium.
The Hawks suffer their second one-goal loss of the season to fall to 0-3, while the Skyhawks even their record at 2-2.
Trailing 2-0 just 6:53 into the second half, the Hawks jumped on the board when Katsikis received a centering feed from freshman Molly O'Brien (Emerald Isle, N.C.) and put the ball past Stonehill goalkeeper Kaitlyn Curtis and into the right corner of the net. The assist was O'Brien's first collegiate point.
The Hawks tied the game just 26 seconds later after Katsikis' ball was tipped into the right side of the net by Sears.
The game stayed deadlocked through the end of regulation until Jennifer Foley sent the Skyhawks home winners only 1:54 into the overtime session. After gathering a long centering pass on the left side of the field, Foley took space before sending a shot that went around junior goalkeeper Megan Sullivan (Braintree, Mass.) and into the left side of the net.
Sullivan made four saves, playing the second half and overtime, while freshman goalkeeper Jessica Snow (Shrewsbury, Mass.) made five saves in her collegiate debut after playing the first half. Curtis stopped four shots.
Stonehill outshot Saint Anselm, 22-11, including 13-6 in the opening half.
The Hawks return to action Saturday, Sept. 10 when they hit the road to take on American International College at 1 p.m.
