MANCHESTER, N.H. – Sophomore Elizabeth Sears (Danvers, Mass.) scored with 8:14 remaining in the game to lift the Saint Anselm College to a 2-1 victory against Southern Connecticut State University on Saturday evening at Grappone Stadium in the program's first-ever night game on the Hilltop.
The Hawks, who were 3-0 winners against Assumption on Wednesday, win back-to-back games for the first time since Sept. 4 and 6, 2008, when they recorded victories against Assumption and Southern Connecticut. The Hawks snap a three-game losing streak against the Owls to improve to 2-4 on the season, while Southern Connecticut loses at Saint Anselm for the third time in the last four meetings to drop to 2-5.
After a Sarah Cebry goal with 1:54 remaining in the opening half put the Owls on top, 1-0, junior Kristina Katsikis (Hanover, Mass.) weaved in-and-out of a pair of Southern Connecticut defender to score her team-leading fifth goal of the season 6:06 into the second half to knot the game at one.
Then, with 8:14 to play in regulation, Sears hit a laser from the right endline that ricocheted off the post of the cage and in to make it 2-1.
Junior goalkeeper Megan Sullivan (Braintree, Mass.) made four saves, while Southern Connecticut goalkeeper Robin Donaldson stopped five shots.
The Hawks return to action Tuesday, Sept. 20 when they travel north to take on Saint Michael's College at 4 p.m.
