DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. - Joshua Rocco (North Reading, Mass.) scored the game-winning goal in the second overtime period Saturday afternoon as the Saint Anselm College men's soccer team posted a 4-3 victory over the Mavericks of Mercy College at Mavericks Field. The victory improves the Hawks overall record to 2-2-1 on the season while the Mavericks fall to 1-1-1 on the year.
Rocco's game-winning goal came at 102:53 of the second overtime period. A loose ball in the crease was forced home past goaltender Nick Papas to secure the wild victory for Saint Anselm in which nine total cards were issued by match officials in the game.
Maximillian Glebocki (Wilbraham, Mass.) scored his third goal of the season at 18:24 of the first half, opening the scoring on the afternoon. Collin Legge evened the score at one goal apiece with his goal at 29:33 of the period. Glebocki would strike again with his team-leading fourth goal of the season at 40:13 of the first half, lifting Saint Anselm to a 2-1 lead exiting the first half of play.
Matthew McQueeney (Hooksett, N.H.) scored 37 seconds into the second half of regulation with an unassisted tally to increase the Hawks lead to 3-1. Goals by the Mavericks' William Koki at 78:20 and 83:35 knotted the score at three goals apiece, forcing the overtime periods and setting up Rocco's second overtime period heroics.
Hawks goaltender Eric Moriarty (Center Harbor, N.H.) turned aside seven shots on goal and collected his second victory of the season. Nick Papas halted six out of the Hawks' 10 shots on net and drew the loss.
Saint Anselm returns to action Tuesday, Sept. 13 as they travel to Saint Michael's College for a 4:00 p.m. tilt.
